Windows 7 64 or Windows 8 64 bit

Definitely windows 8. Even without touch.

Having metro is actually nice as there are a ton of useful apps in the windows store that I use on a regular basis. On windows 8, you can do anything you can do with Windows 7. On windows 7 you don't have access to the windows app store for RT apps.

Even if you don't like the Metro UI as your primary UI, you can swap to it on the odd occasion if you want to.

Do you have a Touch Screen? - Windows 8.
No Touch Screen? - Windows 7.

I've actually uninstalled Windows 8 Pro from my notebook now and put Windows 7 Pro back.

Windows 8 might be ok for home use, but it is an absolute pain and disjointed experience on a company network.

Just love to have Windows 7 back!

Jip exactly how I felt, I think for average everyday use windows 8 is fine, but with heavy usage windows 7 is still better. I can get to what I want quicker on W7 than what I can on W8, yes there are 3rd party apps you can install for W8, but it is just annoying to have to install 3rd party apps on an os that is already supposed to be top notch.

I have the opposite opinion. As far as i'm concerned, it's already top notch. Now that I'm used to not having a start button (took about 5 minutes to get used to it) I would want to kill it with fire if it ever came back in the same form as previous generations of windows.

I think in the end it boils down to opinion and what you want from the os, and I just feel that W7 suites my needs better, where as W8 might suites others better, but like I said, I gave W8 a go for 2 months, and I didn't hate it, I just felt W7 was better for me, and once I started using it again I just felt more "comfortable"

I still want to know why Microsoft thought people sit and stare at their Start menus and decided to pop live tiles on it.

It's early days. Let the imagination run. One day your supaphone-cum-PC will put live tiles on your watch. Or your server app tile on your phone, or wherever. Or your Mail /Calendar app tile follows you everywhere on any/every device...

you know how I nearly raged when I saw the process you had to through to shut down your pc? and how to get to the control panel? I was like wtf,yes a 3rd party app can fix this, but why should it? And yes I know it may take an extra 2 seconds to have to get to shut down pc or whatever, but I mean when you done you just wanna click and go.

The tiles are cool and all, I worked on a mobile device with windows, but for a pc, it feels like they just pretty much ported it over and was like k there that should make them happy now.

Go for Windows 7. Windows 8 is toss. It took me ages just to find Control Panel. The layout is ridiculous and the start screen is useless. I suggest wait for 8.1 where everything will be back to normal. But even then, Windows 7 just looks so much more appealing. I am so over all this flat 2D bullcrap.

I am already looking forward to Windows 9.

Windows 8 reminds me too much of Windows Vista.

?

Option 1: windows key -> type "cont"
Option 2: hover right -> hover settings

You should try find the log off option... now that was a bitch at first. Took me a while to realise it was right there on the start screen! :P

What I actually loved about windows xp that I do miss was how you could just shutdown using the keyboard, all you had to do was press windows key then press U and then U again, so alota the times I wouldnt even switch my monitor on cause ya I was to lazy so I just windowskey -> U -> U
