Windows 7 a Linux killer?

As long as you have an original copy somewhere in your closet, it's legal to have a "Custom Copied" version on your PC...

Now who has a legal copy of every CD to account for every MP3 on their HDD?

Anyway, I don't believe Windows 7 or any future release will be a Linux killer.

Oh how ironic. Times change...

Windows the new Linux killer.... thought they were not a threat, hey Balmer?

Every MP3 I own is either from a publicly released source, or ripped from a CD that I legally bought.

Same here.

But it seems that this way of thinking is so foreign to Windows users, that they will never believe you. Stand by to be accused of lying.

Come on, do you really pay for your copy of Windows at home?

If only windows users could accept that just because it's *free* software, it isn't necessarily and automatically *good* software... ;)

I use windows.. and I own all of mine.. I made my company buy licenses for all our workstations and servers (including OS and office packages)

I'll admit though its been a while since I touched Linux, It drove me insane to always have to search for drivers and things to run my programs and games. Hell I even went to my MSCE classes more than 10 years ago with a linux laptop to peeve off my teacher.

My wife decided to switch to linux for work a few years ago and I was constinatly having to help her re-configure things when ever she had to do something new or let her use my PC since it wouldn't work and she had a deadline. Maybe its changed now, but I still have some scary horrer stories, that scare me of going back... just like everyone says they do about Windows. (Most of which turn out to be ID10T errors)

I'm more worried though about my wife who wants a Mac now and finding money to pay for that, than the price of win7 when its released.

Actually, yes. I did pay for my copy of Vista.

And, yes, I do know almost everyone pirates Windows, but does that make Windows free? No it doesn't. It just makes the users pirates.

And this is all besides the point anyway, since my argument was based on the article where it states Windows 7 is optimized for netbooks. And when you buy a netbook the Windows price will most certainly already be calculated into it. So it'll be much cheaper to get a Linux netbook.

But hell, don't read what I write. Just blab and pick random posts from me.

Et it does make it free if you don't pay for it, regardless if your pirating or not, it is free :), microsoft have no issues about charging a ton of money for vista so we have no issues downloading and using their software for free :)

Maybe if linux charged a little for their software it would be developed at a faster rate and have a real chance of nailing microsoft. It took ubuntu how many years to look good and be user friendly while everyone was enjoying xp.

Although i suppose if they start charging for the linux the whole free thing would be out the window.

And if it's included in the price of the netbook? Then no, it's not free.

How many years between XP and Vista, and what were the changes?

Linux develops at a much faster rate than windows. You may not be comfortable using linux, and it may not meet your needs, and you can argue that linux came from behind (in terms of ease-of-use) but it really does develop very much faster than windows.

ROFL @ killa's definition of free. Free as in speech (linux), free as in beer (most linux) and free as in stolen (windows) :D

The problem is windows cannot change that much, i mean what else can you really change, they have built on from xp really. Nothing drastic will ever change with windows.

Stolen windows? so the cops will arrest people who use the "free" copies of windows? I think not :p

Yes ET of course it won't be "free" then and yes it will cost more.

Trust a machead to take me seriously!
Hmmm I dont like mac's at all.. I think they are overrated, hence the comment of not wanting to get my wife one. Its easy to design an operating system around a fixed set of hardward to get predictable results. Even easier to design a system like linux where you have to make your own driver if you want it to work right

I don't get it.
Are you saying he has no life because all his mp3's were obtained legally?

yes

nobody is that A**L retentive!

I have MP3's going back to the dawn of civilisation... I'm not gonna delete them just because I can't remember where I got them from!!! :p

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Software/6624.htmlMicrosoft still has one significant Windoze hurdle to overcome, and that Linux is not burdened with - every pre-installed OEM Windoze release adds a significant cost to the purchase price, whereas Linux is free to install.

Given the choice between a netbook with Linux pre-installed and a lower pricetag compared to a netbook with Windoze installed and a higher pricetag, I expect consumers would be more inclined to buy the one with the lower pricetag - especially in the case of a netbook - it's not meant to be a fully-fledged notebook or desktop PC - it is intended for online connectivity.

The newer netbook prices are in line with low end full sized notebooks/laptops already, so it seems the demand for Windows on these machines must already be significant:o.

Personally, I would also rather go with the cheaper Linux variety. Netbooks were originally designed for internet and email on the go. This concept got lost in translation along the way.

Actually you have it the wrong way round, people with lives are not the ones spending saturdays downloading torrents.

Ja, what a bunch of idiots! :D

Everybody knows you schedule your downloads in the morning... and then spend the day by the pool!

Maybe I misread the entire article, but when did microsoft decide to release windows 7 as open source?
