Windows 7 a Linux killer?

Yes, but there's only so much Linux can do about that. Linux devs try and code as many generic drivers as they can, but at the end of the day it's the hardware vendor's responsibility.

What if you can't find a driver for Windows? Would you blame MS or the vendor?

Correct, it is the Vendors responsibility. But we need to get more people to use linux before the vendors will invest money to develop drivers. So what do we do? We code generic drivers, we decompile windows drivers and port them to linux and we build wrappers that allow us to use windows driver in linux.

Due to the tireless efforts of many, we have now got the attention of the vendors, and the list is growing every day. Already most network cards and sound cards come with linux drivers. The better TV cards have linux drivers as well as Nvidia and Ati graphics cards. Even intel and amd are now competing with each other for the Linux market share.

I know Linux will probably always have it's die-hard following, but I don't think it stood a chance anyway of becoming too main-steam until it's as user-friendly as Windows. (And c'mon, it doesn't come close, GUI and all).

Firstly... take a look at this video... and then try compare GUIs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1u2eF5PVho

Secondly... ubuntu has proven to be more user friendly than windows. how... being a FOSS promoter here in SA, I am often at computer stores chatting to the end users and the staff and getting a feel of the field.

Now only taking into account users who are not g33ks or computer literate.

Windows causes users to lose patience at least once a month... they are always need to ask someone for help... and even two or three years into using the product they are still lost.

Ubuntu has had a much favourable result, with people starting to use it, taking a short while to find their way around, and maybe only asking for help a few times in the first few months.

Ubuntu has proven to have a much better support system, where by users can share advice with other users from around the world.

Thirdly... the bells and wistles that Vista came out with, we already had on linux two years prior. If any one is competing for eye candy in the gui front it's OSX vs Linux.

Oh, and FYI, OSX is based on BSD which is related to Linux...

In closing... if you want something that's really easy to use... get an Apple Mac...

I thought OSX was closer to UNIX than BSD?

And if my wife reads that last comment of yours and makes me buy her, her mac.. I'll have to come and find and hurt you :D

Remember, Linux is a based on UNIX. So is BSD. They are two kids of the same father... OSX is kinda like UNIXs Grandchild... and what a splendid grandchild she is... and trust me... you get your wife a mac, and you'll have a bigger problem on your hands... getting yourself a mac... damn those things are not cheap... but they are so worth it... when my isp get's just a little bit bigger i am getting me a new one, with two of those cinema sized screens... it's better than porn!

@Schurtek, LOL... I'll get a Mac, but as a toy to keep around. Its one of those I want to have's, not a Need to have, so its going to be a very long while, Maybe when I'm 80 years old pretending to be cool. But its going to be along while before somebody convinces me to use Linux as my main OS.

@EtienneK, From what I understand, OSX (being the grandchild of UNIX as Schurtek says) runs with many of the same commands and things as the UNIX based systems at cern. The programs she uses to code in, can be run natively on OSX and the programmes actually run at least 4 times faster (I didn't believe her at first.. but saw it with her collegues and its true)

When they are running simulations that take 8 hours, the time adds up to get a result. However I am sure I can get her a decent Laptop that runs just as quick for half the price. Of course the other thing is since everyone else in her group are now all using Mac's, Problem solving is much easier if there is a problem.

She did try running Linux for about a year and nearly shot herself from the errors and problems she kept on running into, So now its a choice of a decent Windows laptop, or a Mac. I don't think she will ever look at linux again

Sounds interesting, what does she do? I'd think CERN pays well enough or would give away macs to workers.

She is a particle physics PHD student on the LHC ATLAS experiment. CERN doesn't pay though, at least not her, With everyone complaining about the money CERN is spending, they actually had to retrench some people last year. Claire also doesn't get a salary at all in SA for any of her work,

The DST funds the NRF, who gives her supervisor money, who then pays for her flights and things to CERN when ever needed. They have to buy their laptops themselves, which is why I am now being "forced" into getting her one.

I have half convinced her though today that I can try let her test out a decent Intel laptop, but will kill me if I put Linux on it

I see... being a mac user I'd say go mac, build quality and cheaper software costs in the long run make it worth it. ;)

Why don't we all forget about Windows7 and Linux for a moment and put Open Solaris on our pc's?

The most advanced OS in our known galaxy and not even a mention in this thread :-/

Remember to keep that bootleg XP copy to still play your games on though ;-) You will never get rid of Windows till you can't play ALL the games without troubles on the other OS's. Cedega and Wine just doesn't cut the bread yet.

Ubuntu is a dead end OS... They cant seem to fix a bug without introducing 10 others... Maybe the next one...

Being GPL incompatible does not give it broad support I guess.

i actually tried to install opensolaris on my hp530 laptop but it would not play nice with the intel or i810 video driver

Agreed. 100% spot-on

Of course it does. When's the last time you've used it?

I use it regularly and still look for functions now and then. The thing is, it is simply not user-friendly enough for people to want to migrate from XP to Ubuntu (let alone the other distributions of Linux).

One word...

Compiz.

Compiz FTL. Causes my PC to either crash/freeze or it doesn't work at all.

EDIT: And on another not, Windows 7 will certainly not be a Linux killer. Don't know where anyone got that idea.
