Was that your attempt at sarcasm? Honestly, when's the last time you've used it?
Looking at his sig... I'd say he likes Ubuntu.

Yes, but there's only so much Linux can do about that. Linux devs try and code as many generic drivers as they can, but at the end of the day it's the hardware vendor's responsibility.
What if you can't find a driver for Windows? Would you blame MS or the vendor?
I know Linux will probably always have it's die-hard following, but I don't think it stood a chance anyway of becoming too main-steam until it's as user-friendly as Windows. (And c'mon, it doesn't come close, GUI and all).
I thought OSX was closer to UNIX than BSD?Oh, and FYI, OSX is based on BSD which is related to Linux...
In closing... if you want something that's really easy to use... get an Apple Mac...
And if my wife reads that last comment of yours and makes me buy her, her mac.. I'll have to come and find and hurt you![]()
They irony in it is she wants the Mac because she is sick of having to use PUTTY in order to do her work at cern, So its not really for ease of useIn closing... if you want something that's really easy to use... get an Apple Mac...

From what I understand, OSX (being the grandchild of UNIX as Schurtek says) runs with many of the same commands and things as the UNIX based systems at cern. The programs she uses to code in, can be run natively on OSX and the programmes actually run at least 4 times faster (I didn't believe her at first.. but saw it with her collegues and its true)
She is a particle physics PHD student on the LHC ATLAS experiment. CERN doesn't pay though, at least not her, With everyone complaining about the money CERN is spending, they actually had to retrench some people last year. Claire also doesn't get a salary at all in SA for any of her work,Sounds interesting, what does she do? I'd think CERN pays well enough or would give away macs to workers.

The DST funds the NRF, who gives her supervisor money, who then pays for her flights and things to CERN when ever needed. They have to buy their laptops themselves, which is why I am now being "forced" into getting her one.
I have half convinced her though today that I can try let her test out a decent Intel laptop, but will kill me if I put Linux on it
Why don't we all forget about Windows7 and Linux for a moment and put Open Solaris on our pc's?
The most advanced OS in our known galaxy and not even a mention in this thread :-/
ROFL @ killa's definition of free. Free as in speech (linux), free as in beer (most linux) and free as in stolen (windows)![]()

Of course it does. When's the last time you've used it?
One word...
Compiz.
Its a mis-leading topic, The article says the oppositeEDIT: And on another not, Windows 7 will certainly not be a Linux killer. Don't know where anyone got that idea.
Compiz FTL. Causes my PC to either crash/freeze or it doesn't work at all.
