Windows 7 is great on even older machines, runs flawless now on my aged lappie: 1.8ghz Turion, 1gig of ram and 100gig hdd.
Though the only thing that didnt work was the OC toolz for this lappie but not many ppl are interested in that.
And Dungeon Keeper 2 is still a legend!!! Revived by Win 7

Oh God.. Im a broken man now.
But hey ... on the bright side of things ... all those incompatabilities (spelling???) keep a lot of guys employed! Always a positive spin off somewhere.
I think Killadoob is a bit frustrated, as are a lot of other Vista users, about being told a lot of negative B.S on a system that runs just perfectly fine with the setup they have. And if we voice our positive opinions, we are shut down by those who can't fathom that there are millions of happy Vista users.
So Win 7 is the topic, I really liked it, took a bit long to install, but went seamlessly, every driver was already there and my nVidia drivers update via MS update, sweet! Yes I did have some issues with a couple of games, and yes I still do not like 64bit versions of win7 or Vista. Hate device signing security feature!
Overall its as nice as vista, with some improvements. Will I buy it, maybe ... depends on the price. Otherwise I sit like an XP user and ask why change to Win7 if my Vista is fine? as they ask about changing from XP to Vista...
If you have Vista.. from what I understand.. the license keys will work with W7.. though I read this in an online article.. so I dont know how accurate it is.
What I love about W7 is the better kernel.. and the fact that it seems to support legacy hardware okay.
Its the first time I have ever installed a MS OS and not had to install drivers to get something working. That happens all the time in Linux, but for MS this was a new and orsmly refreshing experience.

AFAIK W7 runs on the same kernel as Vista, or so M$ originally said.
You sure about that? I was under the impression they had cleaned a lot of the bloat out of it... but again.. this is second hand information so I am not sure.

Irg there are a few reasons i love windows 7:
1. corel draw and photoshop open instantly and 3 x faster than xp and vista which is insane.
2. i love how you can put 2 pages side by side so easily, have done away with my dual monitor setup and bought a bigger monitor.
3 stickies are just really cool.
4. did i mention it is blazingly fast
5. the taskbar is amazing, simply incredible actually.
6. since vista has been around it has drivers for just about everything.
wizard if you knew anything about windows 7 you would know there is no point mounting your bf 2 image as punkbuster does not work with windows 7 at this present time so you will get kicked instantly from the bf 2 servers with an api error, Punkbuster does not develop for beta Operating systems and while there are alot of "fixes" for punkbuster nothing will work on bf 2. The kernel has been revamped in a sense, same old vista kernel hense why the drivers from vista work so well. windows 7 has been tweaked heavily in order for it run fast so it does not suffer the same fate as vista.

It felt almost like a linux installation
First painless M$ OS installation I did in recent memory...
Can't guarantee it, but I'm sure I saw it in one of M$'s release articles.
Wizard... You mentioned earlier that Education institutes mostly run on a tight budget. I agree to that, but do you work with those companies to get that Microsoft volume licenses for Education Institutes where, if they have original (lets say XP) licenses, they can upgrade to the desired OS at a way downgraded cost...? I am also now saying it under correction as I don't know if MS have changed that already...

I ran Win7 for a while, like I said, was realy good. But I killed it soon after. I thought, what if I run this thing till it expires and or it gets sold (officially). And then i'll have to reinstall (cause traditionally MS does not let you upgrade betas to full). And I hate re-installing. So I swopped back to my vista drive, formatted the win7 drive, cloned vista onto the bigger drive, and stuck my original vista drive into a drawer somewhere.... I might use it never know?

Yup if you use windows 7 you can feel it's identical to vista. IRG i did not like windows 7 at first and did the same thing but then i just loaded and thought lemme see if it can use it as my OS and i could and i just loved loved it, similar to vista, did not like it all that much as first but the more i used it the more i loved it. Windows 7 is vista on steroids i think. Takes all the goodness of vista and creates one monster OS that is faster than xp
Reloading is nothing if you store your information on another hdd, reloading windows takes quick.
Am i mistaken in thinking if it was a new kernel the vista drivers would not work?

The problem is not the cost of the license.. but the cost of the hardware to run the OS, added to that the cost of upgrading all PC and network peripherals (like scanners, network printers, NAS devices .. and of course the customized software).
Now what could the average university staff member do on Vista that they cant already do on their current network? The cost is simply not worth it which is why most institutions I have dealt with have held back their budgets for a mature W7.

I hope that they got someone testing that custom software in a Win7 environment, or it will still be an XP thing for the future...
Yea but people claiming vista is not better than xp is not the truth, vista just cannot handle slower pc's, does not mean it is not a better OS but my point is that windows 7 runs hardware faster than xp and that is the reason windows 7 will become popular, windows 7 is so similar to vista in everything bar a couple really cool changes and the speed
Vista cannot handle SLOWER PCS to do the same TASKS Windows XP does fast. Buying Vista does not buy you extra functionality, just delivers a slower system. When you 'upgrade' to Vista, u downgrade your performance across all platforms. Buying a faster CPU and more RAM allows you to keep the
same performance level with Vista but with XP you actually get a -duh- faster machine. I'll look into 7 when SP1 comes out but for now everything works well for me in XP.
All the enterprise notebook and PC makers worth their salt offer an XP 'downgrade' - HP, Dell, Panasonic, etc.
As for malware, Vista is STILL SUSCEPTIBLE to MALWARE. This has not changed significantly at all.
