Windows 7 As Primary OS?

win7 is not my primary, but it replaced my xp which i used to play my games on.Vista ultimate still has some life it until win7 is finalized.

The problem is not the cost of the license.. but the cost of the hardware to run the OS, added to that the cost of upgrading all PC and network peripherals (like scanners, network printers, NAS devices .. and of course the customized software).

Now what could the average university staff member do on Vista that they cant already do on their current network? The cost is simply not worth it which is why most institutions I have dealt with have held back their budgets for a mature W7.

True... I see your point... As I am working for a rather large company (mining group) we also stick with XP at this time, and where Windows 7 is already approved, but will ONLY be loaded and implemented once Win7 is in a productive state. For as the beta I am using it for testing at this stage. Luckily we have now started to implement new hardware, as we are on a 3 year budget with the IT infrstructure. If a PC / Notebook is older than 3 years, it will be replaced with a new one. That is mostlty for assuring that we meet with the corporate standards. I don't really know how the education institutes' budgets work, but I PERSONALLY think, where possible also budget for the long term hardware requirements as well. Then the custom software - as I understand it is the major issue for not upgrading. Valid point, but one day, they will have to, to keep up with international standards.

Vista cannot handle SLOWER PCS to do the same TASKS Windows XP does fast. Buying Vista does not buy you extra functionality, just delivers a slower system. When you 'upgrade' to Vista, u downgrade your performance across all platforms. Buying a faster CPU and more RAM allows you to keep the
same performance level with Vista but with XP you actually get a -duh- faster machine. I'll look into 7 when SP1 comes out but for now everything works well for me in XP.

All the enterprise notebook and PC makers worth their salt offer an XP 'downgrade' - HP, Dell, Panasonic, etc.

As for malware, Vista is STILL SUSCEPTIBLE to MALWARE. This has not changed significantly at all.

I disagree here, I ran Vista SP1 & XP SP2 on my system. I ran 3Dmark on both and scored better in Vista?

Ok, quick question - Win7 Beta Expires in august right? what's stopping me from setting back my bios time/etc ?

The thing with you sit with a faster XP system but then with the same performance compared to XP if you have Vista... You will have an Overall faster system even when using Vista... Processing of apps would be faster.

Vista is a piece of crap, I thought Vista was good but I was deluding myself, I have to restart it often because it is so bloody useless yet I score 5.9 with everything...

Win7 looks promising but there is no support if something does not work since it's a beta.

Just give an OS a chance when you have loaded the needed SP's. Then again, personal opinions - I have used Vista for close to a year now, and not one major problem to date... Keep it updated, protected and maintained, and most OS's wil work like a dream...

If you have to restart it regularly, then you have some other software issue ... plain and simple.

I'm on SP1 and it's still a pain in the butt...
Paint!... Paint! will hang and refuse to load after closing.

Vista is snappy on my machine but I have turned of all the GUI goodies by choosing the performance option, yet it's still not stable, media center would crash for no reason many times, it is a very random OS on my machine.

Nope this will even happen on a clean install.

In case you think it's my machine... Linux and XP run perfectly, 7 also ran pretty well.

<Tired M$ Fanboi Excuse> That is because linux does not use your hardware to its fullest potential </excuse>

what ram are you using? more than often it is faulty ram that can cause hanging etc. due to the fact that vista keeps more pre-loaded software in its ram, its more likely to pick up ram faults and freeze. try down something to run some memory checks.... could be that simple.

I purchased a mobo from rectron (was faulty - they stuffed up, put faulty one that they had tested into good ones box, sent me faulty board and the good one in for repair!) I managed to load and run Vista successfully, but it had intermittant BSODs - the rectron crowd couldnt even get anything to load. So u never know if your mobo with your other peripherals could be problematic?

Maybe try and increase the PageFile settings if it might be of any good...
