The problem is not the cost of the license.. but the cost of the hardware to run the OS, added to that the cost of upgrading all PC and network peripherals (like scanners, network printers, NAS devices .. and of course the customized software).
Now what could the average university staff member do on Vista that they cant already do on their current network? The cost is simply not worth it which is why most institutions I have dealt with have held back their budgets for a mature W7.
Vista cannot handle SLOWER PCS to do the same TASKS Windows XP does fast. Buying Vista does not buy you extra functionality, just delivers a slower system. When you 'upgrade' to Vista, u downgrade your performance across all platforms. Buying a faster CPU and more RAM allows you to keep the
same performance level with Vista but with XP you actually get a -duh- faster machine. I'll look into 7 when SP1 comes out but for now everything works well for me in XP.
All the enterprise notebook and PC makers worth their salt offer an XP 'downgrade' - HP, Dell, Panasonic, etc.
As for malware, Vista is STILL SUSCEPTIBLE to MALWARE. This has not changed significantly at all.
Ok, quick question - Win7 Beta Expires in august right? what's stopping me from setting back my bios time/etc ?

Vista is a piece of crap, I thought Vista was good but I was deluding myself, I have to restart it often because it is so bloody useless yet I score 5.9 with everything...
Win7 looks promising but there is no support if something does not work since it's a beta.
Just give an OS a chance when you have loaded the needed SP's. Then again, personal opinions - I have used Vista for close to a year now, and not one major problem to date... Keep it updated, protected and maintained, and most OS's wil work like a dream...
Nope this will even happen on a clean install. If you have to restart it regularly, then you have some other software issue ... plain and simple.
In case you think it's my machine... Linux and XP run perfectly, 7 also ran pretty well.

I'm on SP1 and it's still a pain in the butt...
Paint!... Paint! will hang and refuse to load after closing.
Vista is snappy on my machine but I have turned of all the GUI goodies by choosing the performance option, yet it's still not stable, media center would crash for no reason many times, it is a very random OS on my machine.

what ram are you using? more than often it is faulty ram that can cause hanging etc. due to the fact that vista keeps more pre-loaded software in its ram, its more likely to pick up ram faults and freeze. try down something to run some memory checks.... could be that simple.
