Windows 7 Likely Going Modular, Subscription-based

80%+ of your servers will be Linux. Linux rules the drones :>

That doesn't really help anyone who wants a desktop OS, ie. all of us. The server market makes sense, the only users are geeks and Linux makes it more customisable plus it's free for businesses.

What are the latest usage numbers for Linux on the desktop? Everyone was sure that seeing as Vista is so terrible there would be a big surge in Linux adoption.

I don't know if there's a way to know.

All of my computers were bought with an extraneous OS that I didn't want/need but had to pay for. Presumably they're counted as MS OSes because of the sales, but none of them kept their MS status beyond half an hour or so.

Also, from the linux side you can't regard downloads as an accurate measure of the OS's popularity.

I think there is a surge in linux's popularity - there seem to be a lot more questions on the forum for instance - but a surge from a few percent to a few+1 percent will hardly make a difference to MS.

Windows 7 is not only about being subscription based. More importantly it will be the first modular OS to come from MS. I think this should have been done years ago, this way the system can be tweaked far better than a microkernel could ever be.
