When Windows 7 launches sometime after the start of 2010, the desktop OS will be Microsoft's most 'modular' operating system to date. That's not necessarily a good thing, of course; Windows Vista is a sprawling, complex OS. From Microsoft's perspective, though, there are many possible benefits. The OS's developers can add/remove functionality module by module. New modules could be sold post-launch, keeping revenue streams strong. A modular approach could also allow the company to make functionality available on a time-limited basis, potentially allowing users to 'rent' a feature if it's needed on a one-off basis. Microsoft is already testing 'pay as you go' consumer subscriptions in developing countries

Im laughing at the MS users now. *point and laugh* subscription! ouch.

money aint an issue

quality and being able to use the things like corel draw photoshop those things i worry about, also the ability to play the latest dx 12 version or whateva windows 7 will have would also be awesome

by then we will have such amazing graphics in games that all these non paying OS's wont be able to play hahah

some story about something that might or might not happen does not worry me either

as long as microsoft keep their quality and keep developing windows im happy to pay for it

its better than these free OS's that take 5 times as long to get anywhere close to windows
maybe if free OS users contributed towards the development then windows would have some competition but they all to happy to use a free OS and then go on about how you have to pay for windows which basically runs the world

naaa web im sure linux it good but i need corel and photoshop on a daily basis for my print company so i dont think linux will suit my needs :)

gimme a good linux distro to download though just for interest sake :)

 Pay for continuous use for an OS. What fun.

* Goes off to renew his WoW subscription.

Modular? You mean as in package-based, as in like Linux?

Sounds like they are creating a version of Linux, only you have to pay for it :D

Killa Google donated quite a large sum of money (in the high millions) to the company who built Wine (basically software that will allow you to run Windows apps on Linux), so that they could work on getting Adobe products (i.e. Photoshop) to run on Wine. I'm not saying Linux will suit your needs as a designer right now, but the time that it will is nigh :)

yea well google should start investing more because they not short of cash and that kinda money is exactly what the linux world needs

i mean google could inject 1 billion without blinking, hopefully they do :)

a team of well paid dedicated OS builders is what linux needs and im sure one day it will happen

Well look at what Mark Shuttleworth's money has helped Ubuntu to accomplish. All we need now are more people who think like him.

If that means I don't have to buy all the components that I disable anyway then its a good move. Knowing Microsoft though I'm not holding my breath.

I reckon this approach is aimed to compete with google's new "online office approach".

Windows doesn't actually rule the world. Most large companies use some form of Linux. Also, you can play the latest games, even dx10, on Linux.

Really?

I don't think trying to sell gaming on Linux is a good idea though, definitely best to stick to Windows for that.

I read this article a few days ago and the first thing I was thought about was the piratebay posts and how they would hack a modular OS. Which bits will everyone want. :/

mavix

first off, dx 10 games do not run on linux thats a fact
second most new dx 9 games run like crap on linux

i would say windows is installed on 80 of the worlds computers, im pretty sure windows runs the world man
15% run mac and 5% run linux

now im not saying linux sucks or linux is this or that

im just saying windows runs the world due to its compatibility with alot of major software

I am not interested in a subscription-based model.

I want to have the entire OS on a CD/DVD just in case I need to reinstall and telkom's playing silly buggers again.

Besides, subscription models won't work with telkom.

For those who says money isn't an issue - there's other people for whom money will be an issue - so basically M$ will lock the poor people as well as small companies out as they won't be able to afford this kind of model.

the one major i see with this whole subscription thing is how many ppl have windows but no internet connection?

so wizard do you think ppl with no internet connection will be excluded from windows 7?

i doubt that very much

They will have to bring out a "corporate edition", as the big corporations are not going to fall for the modular approach. This "version" will probably exclude the DirectX "module" though.
