Windows 7 - Linux showdown

3 sec boot up your joking right I wait way longer. almost the same as xp.

Ye that is obviously a joke. It's just some specialised or tweaked distro. Useless stat for normal users, my Ubuntu booted slower than Vista for sure.

And one of the bigger points with Windows 7 was boot time. Only 1 sec improvement over Vista (which was a lot faster than XP SP3) so far with the M3 pre-beta.

For me its about bloat. I fail to see how they can justify an os with absolutely nothing installed, idling at 1.3gb of ram used. I dont have a spare 15k lying around the house that I can use to get a new laptop to run win Vista or 7.

I am waiting for my ubuntu 8.10 CD's to arrive and will then dual boot that with my XP until I have no choice but to upgrade.

My issue is that all my clients are Windows so I have no choice but to use it.

ubuntu is cool, nice and simple. But is considered to be one
of the most top heavy linux distributions out there, yet despite
all of that its is still not one 5th as top heavy as windows, and
even if it was Linux's way superior memory management whould
have taken it in its stride. And who ever said linux should look like
windows or whatever should get physically harassed. Ubuntu's
interface is way superior. But must admit not to into the orange/brownish
colour scheme, but @ www.gnome-look.org u can get pretty uber
themes for gnome which could result in a desktop that laughs at
the dull mac look. Linux for life!!...but will advise some of u Ubuntu okes
to try out Gentoo if u want to dig a little deeper into the Linux experience.

The repos have a few nice themes too, I discovered them yesterday by searching synaptic, downloaded some cool icon themes and all on local, now I am set for a good few months of customizing.

I was reading an article a few days ago comparing the current build of Windows 7 to Windows Vista, and from the benchmarks that were done, it seems that although Windows 7 has had an overhaul of it's front end to make the interface a bit faster, tests show no significant difference between their backends, so nothing actually runs any quicker. I'll see if I can find the link.

The reposistory has some nice theme, I like gnome-look.org, the selection of themes they have is astounding, and their icon packs are amazing. But if u found something to your liking awesome :):D

My reasoning why linux will fail on the desktop side is that oss companies like canonical rely on selling support for revenue ! How many home or soho linux users 'buy' support ? !

That's because most of the current Linux users are the "techy-geecky" crowd. With more average PEBKAC users, comes more required support which people will gladly pay since they got all the software free upfront. See "The Beekeeper" (free e-book, google to find.)

Can you game on it?

yes..but wont call windows gaming on it ready for the
masses, requires quite allot of toggling with wine and
winetricks. But there is some awesome tutorials online
to simplify it, requiring one to just be able to read.

But wont call this simple enought for the masses though.
But all of this isn't Linux's fault, game developers just tend
to develop more to the windows side of things unfortunately.

Can you game on it?

Yes you can. There are even a number of free OpenGL titles available, which are worth trying. In addition, the Quake and UT series come with OpenGL versions which either run natively on Linux, or can be run under Wine. However, most new Windows (note: *Windows*) titles which are strictly DirectX, will not run well on Linux. If that's your pleasure, stick to Windows.
:)

my Ubuntu booted slower than Vista for sure.

Mine too, from grub menu to desktop...

Vista = 37s
Kubuntu to gnome desktop = 53s

Now this is a quad core with velociraptor boot drive minus bios post.

My macbook 2ghz with 5400rpm hitachi drive from a cold start to desktop takes 36s, that's faster than my quad core vista.

the one thing i find about windows and linux boot times is that on linux when the desktop shows, everything is loaded. on windows, the desktop will show but you might find that there are processes still loading which means you still effectively have to wait longer for the system to have completed loading.

That's true, Linux was fully loaded but Vista still continued loading in the background in my test.

On Vista from desktop to usable takes another minute, I would estimate on my laptop.

dont know what my boot time is on Linux, dont care either, last time my computer was of was three months ago(my desktop) and that was due to a power failure. U just dont really need to restart Linux for anything other than power failures

Me sticks to Windows because whatever OS I use must be able to play the latest games. Been using Vista now for longer than a year with no issues (plus it looks good too).

and to be fair, whether you are pro Linux or pro Windows, even a boot up time of 2 minutes is not really something that should be concerning people. Even when I ran windows exclusively, i hardly rebooted my computer.
