Windows 7 - Linux showdown

XP is my last microsoft OS until such a time as they drop their DRM nonsense.

Vista has done more for Linux than Linus Thorvalds ever could :D

groan. Another Windows vs linux - there won't be a winner. (We all know Linux rocks!! :D)

Its like the Xbox vs PS3 threads :)

Today, however, things look vastly different. Partly because Microsoft is now effectively downplaying Vista to such a degree that it's as if the company has written it off.

Wonder what the m$ fanbois would have told you when you said that on Vista's release date...

Well since the bench tests I have seen dont place Windows 7 much faster than Vista... its not ganna be a very fair fight.

I love supporting the underdog but linux will ultimately fail in the desktop market. Even Canonical hasn't made a profit to date. Unless ubuntu gets good looking like HP's MIE Linux os (which is based on ubuntu) they'll never get more personal consumers. Linux should stick to the server, enterprise & MID markets. Another weird thing is canonical is now gonna support ARM's cortex architecture for ultra low power netbooks & mid's , at this rate they spreading themselves too thin & we'll end up with more versions of ubuntu then vista !

Win 7 vs Linux!

Mac OSX will da winner :)

I'm not so sure hey... for everyday use and non-OSX specific apps I'm warming to Ubuntu and find OSX stable but boring, the novelty has worn off, but I'm looking forward to snow.

+1

XP's Pricing and Activation is bad enough... so I'm not going beyond that. MS can kiss my donkey! Ubuntu will run beside it, until Microsoft plays the game the way I want it. :p

Doubt linux will fail...but you are welcome to your opinion. Ubuntu needs to grow its server product.. Shuttleworth knows this which is why we can expect to see greatness there soon.

Ubuntu servers are starting to be taken more seriously.. Im even starting to run some :) Wikipedia moved all its 100+ servers over to Ubuntu. Companies make money for supporting their flavor of Linux through enterprise server support.

Linux should continue its rabid growth into the market. Novel and handful of the other big vendors are noticing this as well. The more people that get on board, the faster and better the development.

I think there are more versions of Ubuntu than Vista already. Though from what I understand Canonical only suppoer the x.10 version of each major release.

Expect to see linux on more subnotebooks and more embedded devices.

Expect to see more people leave the constraints of the MS world.

I think if it wasn't for piracy linux would do alot better, alot of people would rather use a free os like ubuntu if they had to pay for windows.

I guess by that you mean in the bells and whistles department ala M$... To which I have onle one word as a response: compiz

What freaks me out that I cannot buy a specific Notebook with Linux on it. Most of them come with Vista or XP. There should be a law that states if you buy a notebook/desktop you can choose the OS that you want.

And Windows7 thinks its KDE on OSX. At least their going in the right direction.

I truly hope that W7 gives LINUX the motivation to become a real Desktop OS. Sure, its great for my wife - Spreadsheet and database app with PHP frontend - but for my Dad, it still too technical.

Ha this is weird no die hard window's boys here for me to mutilate (what a let down)..anyways we all know the power of the penguin is imminent, and that we just started to discover the possibilities of open source. Open source will take the market before 2010 just you penguin haters watch and see as bill and his windows break down piece by piece

I've fully converted one person to Linux so far and happy with this, even when Wifi gave problems on Kubuntu she was not interested in switching to Windows so I just installed Ubuntu and that sorted the wifi issues out for some strange reason. This person is now officially converted and mocking her Winblow user friends.

Will 2009 finally be the year of Vista on the desktop?

My reasoning why linux will fail on the desktop side is that oss companies like canonical rely on selling support for revenue ! How many home or soho linux users 'buy' support ? Linux should go where the money is i.e server, enterprise & embedded ! Creating a desktop is great but not if its half baked, remember just because its free software dosent mean its great software !
