Windows 7 - Linux showdown

My reasoning why linux will fail on the desktop side is that oss companies like canonical rely on selling support for revenue ! How many home or soho linux users 'buy' support ? Linux should go where the money is i.e server, enterprise & embedded ! Creating a desktop is great but not if its half baked, remember just because its free software dosent mean its great software !

Yea, but why do so many companies buy Windows for their servers?
Because that's what their users use as their desktops, and that's what their "sysadmins" use at home, and what they used in school, etc etc.

Linux generally owns the very techno-savvy server market (except where sExchange is already insidiously rife through the network) but the normal day to day server stuff where people just use what they normally would, i.e. "Windoze"?

The more people get converted on the desktop side, the more will start using the server side and (hopefully) using their corporate support.

yes..but wont call windows gaming on it ready for the
masses, requires quite allot of toggling with wine and
winetricks. But there is some awesome tutorials online
to simplify it, requiring one to just be able to read.

But wont call this simple enought for the masses though.
But all of this isn't Linux's fault, game developers just tend
to develop more to the windows side of things unfortunately.

So true I get tired of people blaming linux for the poor gaming support. It isn't a case of linux isn't designed for games, but that games aren't designed for linux.

WINE - Can't stand WINE on Linux lately.

Actually nothing has ever run perfect on WINE for me ever :( never ever ever and I have tried plenty. :(:( 9/10 of the games don't even start.

Nice, but I prefer a desktop with no icons.

hehe thanks, yea thats the thing with linux its up to you just where/what how and so forth, saw some guys do some really sick stuff with their desktops..i'm not THAT vain u know haha.....but want to puke at the first sighting of XP's green/blue theme. Vista ...not even going to go into that

Mine too, from grub menu to desktop...

Vista = 37s
Kubuntu to gnome desktop = 53s

Now this is a quad core with velociraptor boot drive minus bios post.

My macbook 2ghz with 5400rpm hitachi drive from a cold start to desktop takes 36s, that's faster than my quad core vista.

I installed fluxbox today and from grub to my flux desktop took about 34s, just goes to show how bloated my gnome desktop must be.
