Windows 7: The good and bad

Has anyone mentioned the Win7 RC issue that in March 2010 it starts switching off every two hours? I think thats DAMN irritating.

Long trial

The Windows 7 release candidate can be downloaded for free until July this year and is available as both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. The 32-bit version comes in at a little under 2.5GB while the 64-bit version is a lot bigger at 3.2GB. Interestingly, Microsoft has said that users who download Windows 7 RC will be able to run the software for free until June 2010 before being required to purchase a copy, which is a very long trial period given that Windows 7 Final is expected to be released later this year.

Except from March 2010 - it'll switch off every 2hours to remind you to buy a copy.

32 vs 64

"seems" is subjective :D

The 64 bit advocates quote a whole raft of reasons that it is better, and on the whole I agree with most of them. However, my experience with 64 bit OS and 64 bit software here at work is that while it definitely is better, we haven't noticed the "enormous" increase in speed, stability, etc that is hyped about. Rather the improvement is incremental. (and here I'm talking aobut BIG server/database environments).

I am a fan of 64 bit, but wouldn't recommend it for every situation.

Except from March 2010 - it'll switch off every 2hours to remind you to buy a copy.

Do you want microsoft to give you a free OS to use forever or what? If you have a 64 bit cpu run 64 bit on 2 or 4gb memory and it will run better than the 32 bit.

I never said that - they said it expires in June/July 2010 - not that it starts switching off in March 2010, every two hours.
 
I still don't see the need to replace XP.

Vista, 7 Beta, 7 RC... really, windows XP is still going strong, there really is nothing "more" to offer from vista and 7 so far to make me upgrade.

Security:
1. Unplug the PC from the mains power and internet.
2. Put PC in car and drive 200 km into the wilds, veld if you live in SA.
3. Dig a 5 foot hole.
4. Place PC in hole, cover with dirt. Make sure not to leave any markings.
5. Walk away from hole.

The only real and reliable way to fully secure your PC, regardless of OS.

However, if you want a reasonably secure PC, then don't visit dodgy web sites. Don't insert your STD stick into an unfamiliar USB orifice. And install a good anti-virus. Also, DO NOT run that tempting exe from that warez, crackz site. :D

So back to Windows7, it's probably as secure as Vista / XP, but probably not as secure as it could be... hope that clears it up :)

True, true, I love my XP... but it's starting to show its age and XP-64bit was a bit of a non starter. So although I plan to run Windows 7 64bit in XP look and feel I think I need the modern OS to keep up with the industry. New software will not be written for XP anymore.

BTW Windows7 runs great, even inside a VM. Maybe not as pretty but still slick and smooth.

However, I can't get it to see the internet through the companies proxy, even though I can get all my other VMs, including ubuntu, to see the internet. :mad:

The Windows7 guest has 752MB RAM and 2 Cores... I'm actually surprised at how well it runs with only 752MB RAM.

I'm running a XP host on a Core 2 Quad 2.8GHz with 3.5GB RAM. Using VMware workstation for my VMs.

I love XP, but I have to disagree about it showing it's age. So it doesn't have aero, big deal. I mean yes software in years to come will drop XP support, but currently you'd have to be crazy not to support XP with it running on more than half the machine of the world.

I recon I will upgrade when Office requires Windows 7 to install or when the new .NET Framework ver X is no longer supported on XP. Until then XP is still going to be around because there is no real business case to upgrade.
The current economical climate is also going to play a part in the adoption of Windows 7 since companies are cutting back on spending.
 
Yup then you should figure out the problem, funny how so many on this forum run windows 7 without so much as a driver problem but you cannot get it running, have not seen a person on this forum who has had so many hassles as you aqua.

7 is running fine now, I had to reinstall and install the older xonar d2 driver not the latest.

But 7 is useless for me, only need it to game. Gonna test out GTA4 because I reported the bugs when I ran it on 7 beta to Microsoft.

Please don't misunderstand me... XP is a good stable OS which is used successfully all over the world for many different applications from desktop, enterprise to embedded appliances. They have already extended support for XP past what they had planned to in the first place. But the time is coming fast when MS will push for the new kid to take over and well, developers like me need to be prepared.

I think that in a few years time, between 6 months to 2 years, third party vendors will stop active support for XP and move aggressively to Windows7. Whether any one of us likes it or not.

Also to make matters more interesting VMs will change how people work. The OS you use will become an arbitary choice you make at the start of the day depending on what you need to do. And backwards support will be as trivial as launching a VM. No more dual/tri/quad boot systems. No more swapping Hard Drives. I'll probably never install Linux natively ever again.

So for me to be able to use VMs more successfully I need more RAM, more RAM means 64-bit, Windows7 64 bit support will be better than XP 64-bit, that just the facts of life. So I think that soon my host OS will have to be Windows7 64-bit. :D
