Windows 7 - Updates/tips/tricks/secrets/etc

The RDP to dual monitors is a killer for me.... means my desktop at work doesn't get all fscked up anymore when I work from home

/THREAD DERAIL

Will try it out but I hope for the best in Vista SP2.

*I'll just stick to my ESET Smart Security, false-positives are just not my style.

Not wanting to start an AV comparison again!!!! But from someone in the field who works with this stuff - ESET is one of the best AV products out there, it also detects significantly more false positives... Just thought I'd add that in. :p

/END THREAD DERAIL

So seriously, I've seen one post thus far regarding tips/tricks/whatever... Perhaps we should also include detected issues thus far - but keep it restricted to issues with the RTM version since it the "final release" version, and also since some stuff worked in previous versions, then it didn't in a later beta or vice versa...

Come on guys, please stop dicsussing anti-virus.

Thanks to nephelyn for the first useful post.

I do like the new tray network connecting. Makes my life a little easier.

Weel, something I found interesting, but can't quite seem to find a short way to get it:

Windows 7 provides a music, pictures, documents, etc library, where you can add the relevant items to each library, which I guess is supposed to assist in organizing everything no matter which folder it is physically stored under. Which is great in it's own way... There is also a Games library too!

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the library link to the Games collection. To access it, I right click on one of my shortcuts and say "open file location" which takes me to the library. Anyways, the part that I found interesting, is that after loading up the game and playing it, the game library lists the game, with its recommended and required performance ratings in order to play the game... Along with a nice picture of the cover of the disc (downloaded automatically from the net)

So how would I add all the music from my d: to this folder? Is there a "add folder to monitor" option of somesort?
Could I then add this "library" folder to winamp/itunes so that all my music is picked up?

Sounds like a pretty useful though. Thanks for the info.

Open the folder that you want to add to a library, and then on the menu bar, use the drop down "Include in Library" menu to add the current folder to the selected library. I'm not sure if there is another way to do this, but it was the easiest I found. Otherwise, open WMC or WMP and add your D: drive as a default entry for the Music and/or Movies and/or whatever option.

The libraries seem to be the central location for app's that use related files. For example, both Windows Media Centre and Windows Media player use the files in the Music library as their library, so the library sort of acts as a central repository for specific types of files (even though the added content may be located in different pathes on your machine).

I haven't tried adding the library to other media player playlists, but will try shortly...

And it doesn't create duplicates of the files? Awesome.

OK, quick update:

The library sort of stores links to locations that you specify. In other words, by adding a C:\music folder and a D:\private\music folder, the library stores the two links to make it seem as though all data is in one folder. (not sure if this makes sense, but it does to me)

You can add your own libraries, and optimize them for specific file types, eg: music, movies, etc

Concerntrating on the Music Library:

1. The only way I know so far to add media to the library is either through Win Media Centre/Player, or by opening a folder and using the menu bar's "Add to library" folder.

2. To play the files in the library, you should be able to either:
a. open the library and on the menu bar is the option "Play All" which play's all the files in th library in your default music player.
b. open your fav music player, choose the open/open folder (VLC) option, and under the desktop in the "open file/folder" window, you should see the library folder, with music as a sub-folder. I don't know about winamp, but in VLC you now need to specify the specific folder listed in the music library - you can't add the library itself. I guess this is because the library folder is rather seen as some container of sorts, and thus cannot be listed as a folder itself.

Hope this helps...

Makes sense.

That does seem pretty cool. Will mess around with it tonight.

Another handy feature of sorts - I seem to have a couple of music files that have incorrect metadata attached - so for example the artist is listed as being Chimaira, when in fact it should be "As I lay Dying".

So instead of manually editing each one to try and change it, I would rather let a media player get the data for me, but for some fscked up reason, it doesn't want to overwrite existing information (even with the option explicity set). I guess that's WMP for you...
Anyway, you can remove the metadata from files using windows explorer - simply select the files you want to remove information from, use the "Organize" button on the menu bar, and select "remove properties". You can then select which metadata properties to remove from the selected files.

# Windows key + Left: docks current window to the left side of the screen.
# Windows key + Right: docks current window to the right side of the screen.
# Windows key + Up: maximizes and/or restores foreground window.
# Windows key + Down: minimizes active window.
# If you want a more Vista-esque taskbar rather than the superbar (why anyone would revert is beyond me), right-click the Taskbar, go to Properties, check the ‘Use small icons’ option, then change the “Taskbar Buttons” option to ‘Never combine.’
# Windows 7 now burns ISO files themselves instead of making users grapple with third-party applications.
# For those lucky people with a multi-monitor setup, Windows + SHIFT + Left (or Right) will shift a window from monitor to monitor.
# Gone is the “Add Font” dialog. It’s been replaced with a much nicer system. Download a font and double-click it (you’ll be greeted with the familar font window, but you should notice it now has a ‘Install’ button).
# Windows 7 now includes Gabriola. This is an elaborate display typeface that takes advantage of OpenType layout to create a variety of stylistic sets.
# If you press Windows + 1, it will create a new instance of the first icon in the task bar. This is handy if you do a lot of coding and need to open several instances of a program.
# If you right-click on a Taskbar icon, it brings up the much talked about Jump List. However, the same can be done by clicking with the left mouse button and dragging the icon “out” (so to speak). This was specifically designed for touch-enabled computers, such as your lovely HP TouchSmart PC.
# To run a program as an Administrator, it’s now as easy as holding CTRL + SHIFT when you open the application.
# With Windows 7, you can now create a ‘System Repair Disc.’ This is a CD bootable version of Windows 7 that includes the command prompt and a suite of system tools. Very handy for those really tough spots (which, with this still in beta, could be just around the corner). To get to this, simply open the Start Menu and type: “system repair disc” in the search field

The library function is great.

Now, how do I get it to go through all my music and rename to the correct name?

Also, Vista had a way to make small videos your background. Is this still possible in Win 7?

I just played it once in WMP while connected to the net and it automatically downloaded the correct details for each song... Not sure how to explicitly force it to do so otherwise, but I'll have a look...

Not sure about the video wallpaper either...

Now this is becoming a great thread. Mods Sticky PLEASE! Oh so please!
