Windows 7 RTM Can Render DVD Drives Inaccessible

Following the installation of Windows 7 RTM some users may find that their DVD drives will be rendered inaccessible, even though the devices functioned under normal parameters before the deployment of the latest Windows client. Microsoft noted that it was aware of the issue, and provided a few workarounds for the affected customers to regain DVD drive functionality. According to the Redmond company symptoms involve completely or only intermittently inaccessible DVD drives post-Windows 7 installations. According to Microsoft, there is an issue with the firmware for some DVD drive products and the Adaptive Link Power Management (ALPM) in Windows 7.

FYI for the record:

Installed Win7Pro 32 on a new BenQ U102 netbook. So far no issues detected - all devices such as wifi, bt, card reader, webcam, etc work fine. The only download required was a Compal Smart Battery power management utility & driver, and Win7 detected this and provided the download link.

No "move" file option in windows 7 explorer ..where/how? Pls

Rclick drag to destination, let go mouse button and you'll end up with copy/move option, but there's probably a better way :), like so:

Copy the following bold text into notepad, save as copymove.reg and then doubleclick it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To]
@=”{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To]
@=”{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}”

OR you can click on the item you want to move and press CTRL+X and then click somewhere else and click CTRL+V...

what bugs me is the new explorer itself, twice already i deleted something by mistake because the right folder was not selected when i clicked on it:mad:

Have you visited control panel to set up mouse preferences?

its not the mouse's fault, sometimes u just have to click twice on something before it selects it, if it failed to register double clicks yes that would be a mouse problem

Guys, help me before I go insane!

Whenever I put a DVD / CD into Windows Media Player, Windows 7's WMP loads the DVD/CD and plays.

How do I stop this?

It's very irratating when I'm watching a movie and I put a DVD in to copy it and it loads it!

So which PC Tune Up Util would u all suggest for win7? i was also thinking of using TuneUp Utils but guess its gonna be no good. Good thing i havnt downloaded it yet.

Haven't read through all the pages buy just found my Win7 with Windows Defender running. I installed NOD32 and a few weeks later in one of the WIn update logs I see it downloading defender updates. I've been running a AV programs for a while!

After some more fiddeling it looks like it auto installs it.
