Windows 7 - Updates/tips/tricks/secrets/etc

It is! :)

I use TuneUp's disk defragmenter, TuneUp Styler, TuneUp 1 click maintenance....the list goes on. Oh, and I paid for it.

TuneUp fixes all of Vista's irritating problems. ;)

Windows 7 does not have irratating problems. :)
I ran Vista numerous times on numerous machines. Never ran it more than a week when I reloaded XP. Even Vista 64 with SP2 had compatibility issues.

Been running the Windows 7 RC1 x64 and the RTM x64 now without going back to XP.
No issues found yet. Buying as soon as released.

I'm on the x64 enterprise edition that I received from my company. The boot time is certainly faster, and some of the new "quick-jump" style menus are really pretty cool once you get used to them.

EDIT: Frontpage will be updated with links as they arrive.

The library function is great.

Now, how do I get it to go through all my music and rename to the correct name?

Also, Vista had a way to make small videos your background. Is this still possible in Win 7?

Install the latest version of Winamp, add the files to the library, select them all, right click, send to:>Auto-Tag. Worked for 80% of my music. Hope it works for you. ;)

Thanks bud. Haven't downloaded a new Winamp in YEARS! Will try tonight.

Also... my first thread of stickiness \o/ yay me!

Let me see.....

1. TuneUp Utilities 2009 does not work 100%

2. AVG 8.5 does not work 100%

Ok, I'm staying with Windows Vista. :p

AVG 8.5 work perfectly fine with Win7 on my laptop.

10 ways to tweak Windows 7 using the Local Group Policy Editor

10 ways to tweak Windows 7 using the Local Group Policy Editor

In Windows 7, you can perform some pretty amazing things by using a tool that’s about as hidden as any Windows power tool can be: the Local Group Policy Editor. That Microsoft has buried this program in a mostly untraveled section of the Windows landscape isn’t the least bit surprising, because in the wrong hands, the Local Group Policy Editor can wreak all kinds of havoc on a system. It’s a kind of electronic Pandora’s box that, if opened by careless or inexperienced hands, can loose all kinds of evil upon the Windows world.

1. TuneUp Utilities 2009 does not work 100% (LoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooL = Epic Fail >> Most these tools do more harm than any good, some basic housekeeping on any PC works much better.)

2. AVG 8.5 does not work 100% =>> Another Fail :D :D :D

Dude the fact that those programs don't work correctly and don't have updates to fix them tells you that it's not very well designed..

Win 7 64Bit all the way for me too..

Windows 7 rocks!

Avg 8.5 works 100% (come to think of it iv got two anti-viruses running - avast & avg)

All my games, programs, sdk's,hardware,LANing, music everything just works!

Since the topic of this thread is about tips and tricks, iv found that the flash ready boost thing works compared to win vista, enabling both cores when booting up does help hmmmm and lessing the kill processing time when shutting down does make for a good o.s

going buy one also when out

I've been playing around with readyboost :) with the 64-bit version, I'm using 3 2GB sticks (for a total of roughly 6GB's) for readyboost :D Seems to work quite alright :D
Don't ask me for benchmarks yet - if the whole "fastness" boost is mostly in my head, then running benchmarks and seeing only minor improvements will only server to break my little excited bubble... I shall be ruined for life, never to recover again...
OK I'm off to get help... :D

Change the Windows 7 Login Screen:

1. Make sure you have this registry key:
2. Make sure it has a value of 1.

First, a check is made to determine if the customization functionality is enabled or not. More precisely, a DWORD value named OEMBackground in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background key is checked. Its data, of Boolean type, defines whether or not this behavior is turned on, i.e. 1 for enabled, 0 for disabled. This value may not exist by default, depending on your system.

Then find a picture to use for the login (make sure it's under 256k.), and stick it in this directory. If the directory does not exist, create it:

As this is an OEM feature images are derived from %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds. Like the registry value, this folder may not exist by default.

In the backgrounds folder, copy and call your image:

backgroundDefault.jpg

Now you're done.
