So I applaud both sides of the spectrum here. I can't say anything about OSX yet because I've never tried it, I wish Apple would release a liveCD of OSX or a virtualised demo version - I've pondered getting a Mac a few times, but it's more about the OS (which I can't play with) and less about the hardware.

I know you can get hacked ISOs for OSX, but it'd be a huge favour to Apple if they could do the liveCD/VM thing.

They let you play with macs at the iStore, you should be able to get an idea.
Or go to the apple site and look. There's videos etc.

Have you tried Moblin yet. Still got some rough edges, but so far I'm very impressed.

There is a hacked livecd of OS X - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showforum=109 Of course, being a hack, it's not supported by Apple and violates their terms of agreement. You can hack OS X to run in a VM too.

No reason why Apple would want to make a LiveDVD though.
 
i love linux. and im an advocate for Crossover, and i run PlayonLinux and Cedega etc. But its just simply too much headache to get my games to work properly on Linux.

I run it, and will continue to run it on my Netbook, and personal server. But my gaming PC is Windows and will stay like that for the foreseeable future.
 
@ rurapente.....stop playing games and get back to work! :-)

Not being a gamer I have made the full switch over to Linux....I just use it @ work merely because that is what the IT department wants...but our system is browser based and works 100% in firefox and even chromium for linux.

I will wait for Linux Mint to bring out their new release though based on Karmic. :-)
 
Boot-up on Ubuntu is also expected to be a lot smoother and attractive because developers are using Red Hat's Plymouth boot system. Using Plymouth, users will get a new, mostly flicker-free, graphical bootup. This won't be worrying Microsoft but will go a long way to reduce the impression that Linux is overly geeky.

Another error. Ubuntu doesn't use Plymouth it uses ubuntu's own xplash, which loads the X window manager to minimise boot times.

Far from it, information in articles should just be accurate.

I love linux, but I have to agree, Windows 7 is great. It's much faster and less resource hungry than previous versions. Microsoft might finally be on the right track to a proper OS.
 
Companies like HP, Dell and Acer should give clients a better choice....you should be able to choose between either a Windoze or Ubuntu OEM. I think that would be very nice...if you choose the Ubuntu OEM...u get R2000.00 off your purchase price :-)

As far as I have seen, Dell do give you a choice on XP or Ubuntu 8.04 (old)
HP Netbook at Game foor R4k with XP - no linux version, according to Dell.co.za website they should stock the Dell Inspiron M10v
but they do not in George

@ kilos....have also seen that on the dell website...but you have do search for a while before finding it. Also, as you say, they give Ubuntu 8.04...why would you want that? Cant remember exactly, but dont think it made a hell of a difference to the price either.
 
What would be reason for Windows users to switch from XP to Windows 7? BTW anything is better than Vista so comparing any OS with Vista is just waste of time.
 
I had a bad experience with Vista, couldn't sleep for ages after using it. It haunts me. I'm never again going to be at the forefront of new OS exploration, just too risky. I'm fine with XP and a bit of Linux on the side for now. Might upgrade to 7 if it continues to get positive reviews!

rurapente, that's cool. Use the best tool for the job at the end of the day. I use WinXP for one one game only and that is it. I tried Win7 and had hassles with that. Linux all the way for me.
 
Already running Karmic beta and while I'm having some issues with the networking (it stops if I reboot the router and doesn't come back online) I'm loving it.
Can't wait for the full release!

On the M$ front, I want a Windows Classic look/feel and I abhor the Vista/Win7 interface. If I could change everything back to classic, I'd use it for games, but then again, I barely play those, so it doesn't really affect me.
