Windows 8.1 goes live

GOOD STUFF
Free for Windows 8 users
Great new Snap Views for side-by-side apps
Bing search integration
SkyDrive sync improvements

BAD STUFF
Still awkward to control with traditional keyboards and mice
A lack of Windows 8-style apps
No true windowing on Windows 8 style apps, full-screen
Lack of desktop improvements

So basically if you never use metro apps then it brings nothing?

Glad to hear the official 8.1 is out. Time to download it.

Although I have gotten too comfortable with Windows 7 :(

I am upgrading because I liked the changes made with Windows 8.1, the speed, and that my games ran faster on Windows 8 for some reason :) I am going to try out a few theme patches so I can get the glassy aero look for Windows 8.1.

Finally done. Looks nice.

Didn't like that fact that it decided to remove my anti-virus and activate Windows Defender...

Can someone point me to an ISO suitable for a clean install?

Also has that benchmarking fiasco been sorted out?

What's supposed to happen when you click download through the Store? Mine just goes back to the Store and I don't see any download happening? Am trying to upgrade from 8.1 Preview

For those that dont like ModernUI (Metro)

You can select what you want it to do, among other things. Just right click on taskbar and select properties to get:

View attachment 75199

You can either have the new:
View attachment 75201

Or the old metro(ModernUI):
View attachment 75203
Guess which one I never see :)

What I like is the fact that your Wallpaper can now be used for the theme, and if you still not happy, do what I did: Install Classic Shell for free as its Open source:

Oh the reason my taskbar is on top is because I am use to it since my Linux gnome days.

You have to have Clean install of Windows 8 Retail/OEM to be able to upgrade, 8.1 preview is basically a full version and will expire January 2014.

A few more questions \o/

With this update:
Do you have to reinstall all your apps?
What actually remains - Am I gonna be sitting with a Windows.old folder and have to reinstall everything?
What happens to my domain settings?

I'm wondering in terms of updating my work laptop :/

Once the file has downloaded, the PC will reboot and start the update process. Depending on your setup, the PC may reboot more than once as the upgrade is applied. You’ll see the same full screen messages in plain white text with a rotating color background that happened when you first installed Windows 8 when the process reaches completion. You may be asked to sign back in to your Microsoft account or to select your color preferences again, but these are signs that Windows 8.1 has been successfully installed.

I actually downgraded to windows 7 this evening :)

Wasn't enjoying 8 at all.

If you upgrading from 8 to 8.1 it will be the same as a normal service pack of old, programs will stay intact. If you installing 8.1 retail over a preview it will move everything to Windows.old

Great, thanks :) As long as everything stays in tact. My work laptop came with Windows 8 but my main pc I did an upgrade to 8.0 then upgraded to 8.1 Preview way back, but that I don't mind reinstalling the odd program.
