Hi,

I got Windows 8 Pro. When I login, I just get a black screen with a mouse cursor on. To get the Metro UI, and the normal desktop mode, I have to sign out and sign back in several times.

What is the best way of fixing this problem?

Thanks.

Hi

It seems to be related to a Graphics driver problem.
You can try to follow the steps listed in the link below (make sure you download a graphics driver suitable for your motherboard):

It may also be a good idea to update the BIOS on your motherboard if you still have problems.

My BIOS is the latest BIOS available on Dell's website. I think this is a graphics issue, I have Intel HD Graphics 3000, im going to try and download the latest Intel HD Graphics driver from Dell's website now, they have one that works on Windows 8.

Had exactly the same issue on a dell studio laptop with Windows 7 the other day. Couldn't fix it so I formatted (which gave me the chance to upgrade it to Windows 8).

Worked fine after. I think this is something related to drivers (not that the wrong driver is in use, but something else).

You can try changing the ambient sensor setting as below:

I was having this same problem, with the Preview and RTM Versions, I have a Dell E6400 and after install it would look good then after reboot it would go to a very dark almost dim/black screen. I tried everything, BIOS, drivers, and nothing worked EXCEPT, I went and disabled the BUILT-IN Windows 8 Ambient Sensor application from controlling my screen brightness, and it worked. It no longer goes dim or black after boot, sleep, or resume!
Almost forgot, in order to change the settings go into Control Panel, then System and Security, Power Options, Edit Your plans settings, go to the Display Option, then locate "Enable Adaptive brightness" and turn them to off for both plugged in and on battery.

Edit: sorry missed your post above. Great that the problem is resolved!
