Windows 8 Consumer Preview

YOu can't upgrade from Linux to W8CP - needs a clean install.

I didnt. I tried to upgrade my windows 7 partition with the install program you download.

Now downloading the ISO`s to see if I can have better luck, but the upgrade failed for me. Twice.

I did an upgrade from Windows 7 using the ISO and it works fine. Maybe that web installer messed up something.

Dunno, its not really complicated hardware. I hardly use the windows partition so its all newish and stuff. Will definitely try the ISO`s once they are downloaded. Im super keen to test this OS. I love new OS`s. Of any type :D

Just a FYI for this thread. If you get the blue screen of nothing like I did. When you restart your computer, it uninstalls windows 8 (takes about an hour) and then lets you back into your OS. If you want to start the process again you have to DOWNLOAD the entire freeken thing again. My advice. Dont use that installer program :D

Last night I used the web installer successfully, without a single issue, on 2 PCs (1 x 64, 1 x32). The downloads to about 70 minutes on each machine.

Guys does this release allow you turn metro off?

WCP keyboard shortcuts (Source):

Windows Key → [Search Term] → Enter will allow you to launch an application very quickly. Pressing the Windows key launches the Start Screen, but immediately typing a search term for an application and pressing Enter will launch the application you desire very quickly

Windows Key + F will bring up the Metro interface to search for files. Selecting a file will open a Metro app first, but if there is no Metro app to open the file it will choose a Desktop app instead

Windows Key + W allows you to search for settings in a similar way to files. A lot of the time the selections will open the Control Panel

Esc (when on the Start Screen) or Windows Key + D immediately ditches the Start Screen for the Desktop

Windows Key + E opens Windows Explorer in case you need to browse files and either don't have it pinned to the taskbar or don't want to search for it

Windows Key + C shows the Charm Bar, which can be hard to get to display with a mouse (especially with multiple monitors)

Windows Key + I shows the information pane that usually only appears once you mouse to the Charm Bar and click Settings. This panel has handy buttons to control volume, networks and power

Windows Key + P shows multi-display options

Windows Key + H brings up sharing options for the application you are using

Windows Key + X shows a context menu filled with links to Windows related settings, such as Command Prompt, Event Viewer, Task Manager, Programs & Features, and more

Windows Key + . chucks the program you're using into either one of Windows 8's multi-tasking sidebars

Windows Key + [1-9] activates one of the programs pinned to your taskbar, with the number you enter corresponding to the location on the taskbar

Windows Key + Tab displays the new Windows 8 Metro multi-tasking sidebar

Installed last night. Don't know if i like it. One thin i don't like is if you install things like Intel & Nvidia drivers, it puts icons on the home screen, Does not blend in nicely with the other app screens.

You do know that you can unpin any icons in your start screen by right clicking on the and selecting the "unpin from start" option on the popup bottom options bar ?

Thats because the normal Start menu now became a screen. I have been using Windows 8 now for 2 days as my core OS and I must admit there is a crapload that I don't like but seeing that this is a preview and not a final product I am sure a lot of it will still change. The funny thing is that Windows themselves said people don't use the Start menu a lot so there remedy is to push it into your face. My biggest problem so far is that Metro feals like a virtual PC sharing the same space as your normal PC as they dont like to interact between each other.

You cant drag things into Metro apps, for instance dragging a mp3 into the music player's playlist, if you double click on files associated to metro apps, causes your desktop to move to the background forcing full screen Metro app, regardless if ifs part of a split screen. Shortcut keys like Windows key + F will bring the Metro search instead of the old search box this filling the screen with a metro interface.

Like I said above this is still preview not even beta so a lot can and will still change, so I reserve my judgement for the final product, so far I feel as much love for metro as I do for Unity and I am running Mint to give you a hint ;)

Not Yet Hope. Going to install Origin on it and copy bf3 from my win7 Drive and do a repair. Will try it out this weekend.

Mods can we get a subforums maybe for Windows 8 since i think there might be a lot of new threads started about experience and general discussion , queries etc .
A subforum will keep it nice and tidy all in place ?

LMAO classic.

Would have been pretty funny if it was half accurate to my situation.

Anyways, my home install went better than my work install (sure it broke grub but I can repair that). For those of you that care, I have not tested bf3 (will tonight), but I did play several rounds of Heroes of Newerth and had no problems. I like the new UI, just a lot of it doesnt work well. There is however potential for a great OS.

It would be really nice if the music app had a volume control :/ Also, does anyone know how to customize the stuff you pin to your start menu? Like change the size and the color of the box for individual applications?
