Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Is the People app meant to be working? Should I be able to add twitter and facebook on there?

seems a bit stupid that you are in this metro environment and then get thrown to the desktop with non-metro apps. i suppose in time this will change but it certainly doesn't give the feel of an integrated system.

That's one reason to close them.

I hate to think what will happen on a network with all the files left open simply because users can't close the app. Never mind apps which have a limited number of concurrent logins.

But then maybe Microsoft doesn't see Windows 8 as a business user product.

The registry begs to differ.

As Per: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageIndex\Product

  • Windows 8 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows 8 Enterprise Eval edition
  • Windows 8 Home Basic Edition
  • Windows 8 Home Premium edition
  • Windows 8 ARM edition
  • Windows 8 Professional edition
  • Windows 8 Professional Plus edition
  • Windows 8 Starter edition
  • Windows 8 Ultimate edition

Alt f4 while on the desktop brings up shutdown/restart/switch user.
You'll also find the power button on bottom right of the good old CTRL-ALT-DEL screen (accessible in either Metro or Desktop).

Agree, there's no denying MS's strategic intent is to push Metro (i.e. succeed in the tablet space), but consider why there is a full open to all "Consumer Preview" long before actual final product launch.

In my view largely to test whether their intent is viable in the market. Based on current sentiment I would guess (if MS are sensible) the final shipping Win8 will be fully configurable in Metro or Desktop modes (wouldn't even discount the re-emergence of some kind of mini-Start menu in Desktop mode).

Time will tell, while the tablet space is an ever growing threat to their traditional PC business, they can't survive/grow by alienating their current consumer/corporate customer base.

i suppose desktop mode remains in this version with the view of killing it off in Win9 or whatever comes next. but i really find it jarring the way you are interchanged between the two interfaces.

but i find that metro has the same issue i had with unity - it has increased my mouse movements. much like office 2007 has done the same. productivity has not been the consideration at all with these changes. and to be frank, i am not even sure that having a touchscreen will make the desktop experience worthwhile. the mouse is next to the keyboard. the screen i have to lunge at.

that said, i don't think that a metro style concept is dead in the water. there is something in me that says i have an appreciation of the vision they have. and that i at some future point when they get it right i will buy into it. in my mind, on a desktop it requires a think of how you use the mouse rather than the touchscreen.

87 MB memory usage for the weather app (metro). WTH Microsoft? My browser, Chrome, is currently using 79 MB.

EDIT: Video metro app, sitting on 76MB. I haven't even played anything in it yet.

Heard about all the different versions they will be releasing - 8 different flavours of Windows 8, seriously? Why on earth would you want to confuse your customers with so many different options. In my opinion there should only be 3 versions:

- Windows 8 Home
- Windows 8 Professional
- Windows 8 ARM

This is one department where OSX wins major points by keeping it simple.

Finally getting around to trying Windows 8, and I like what I see so far (its on my laptop, with the touch pad as close to touch screen as I am going to get), although installing other applications make my start screen look very ugly imho.

EDIT: Was it to much of me to expect some sort of Skype integration with Windows :(

Therefore they are the market leaders with the most consumers .

That doesn't make it suitable for business. It just means that the product will be released in those versions. The problem isn't a technical one. It is a usability one.

In its current form I predict that there will be minimal corporate take-up on the desktop.

Well it tells me they will have a version dedicated to business use, so its highly possible that there could be a version that is totally stripped of the Metro interface for business use.

I'm still trying to download , it stalls at 1.7gb. Think it wasn't meant for me, oh well.

Just use torrents. More reliable, each 2MB block is individually checksum verfied & resent if required.

that would seem a waste of all the development time

Thanx to Vistart

Edit: and to bypass the whole Metro thing just follow this instructions.

Please note: that the ViStart setup tries to install Babylon toolbar or IncrediBar and Registry Cleaner Pro software during the product installation. If you are not interested in the toolbar, uncheck install Babylon toolbar option before moving to the next step. When you see the Registry Cleaner Pro screen, simply click decline button to install ViStart without Registry Cleaner.
