Windows 8 may make Microsoft cool again

No compromises. Windows reimagined. Those were two of the taglines that Microsoft executives repeated over and over Tuesday as they gave the world its first detailed view of the software behemoth’s new operating system, Windows 8.

I absolutely love my Windows 7 and I hope I like 8 as well :)

If you've been following the dev videos of W8, you will see it looks like it'll be crap.

I heard the same story about windows 7 and it the best OS microsoft has ever made so i am glad to be hearing it :D.

Cannot wait, i love testing windows beta's :D

What do you mean cool again? Win7 is the best OS yet!

Microsoft has been cool for a while. Ever since Mac's became the thing the stupids bought :P

It's not a beta, but a preview 32/64-Bit is out later to download. Fresh install is recommended and dev tools are optional :)

http://goo.gl/DEPk2 Hat's off to Lifehacker for the tip :)

Edit: says 8pm PT time so 5am tomorrow morning :D

Is it open to all for download? Or is it necessary to register somewhere? I'd like to give it a try :)

With their launch being almost a year away, makes this very much vaporware -- Microsoft's tactic to show off the product early in it's development cycle is openly an attempt to stave off the threat from Apple and Google.

It's really too early to tell whether this tack is going to be successful, For example Windows Phone 7 similarly introduced a new and interesting paradigm around the touch interface (different to Apple / Google) yet today they fail to gain traction in a market they used to dominate.

Although I love the Apple products -- I'm open to something else, something that both pushes the envelope without sacrificing quality, user experience and cost. Google is not that imo, for me it's a copy of the Apple paradigm with some flashy "cup holders". Microsoft on the other hand, has tried to be different (I appreciate this).

In time we'll know which approach was more appropriate.

I just finished watching the keynote. It looks really good. Digging the windows live integration!

Absolutely loath that the new default is Tablet orientated on a long running DESKTOP OS. I've worked with every windows version to date, and I've never been so disappointed with the direction MS is taking. I'd rather use 3.1 than the Metro UI on a desktop.

MS cool?? Really!!?? Get real people this is all a PR stunt.

Will they release Service Pack 20 at the same time?

Isn't the next version of Windows meant to be cr@p (based on previous schedule of good than bad)?
