Windows 8 upgrade version conundrum

If your phone number isn't listed in the phone book is it your fault or theirs? :P The registrars should be monitoring the IP registry more closely

I don't know? From what I understand, its up to MTN to list the IP's. However, I understand that from posts I've read on the MB forums, and its not confirmed.

I don't know how it works, I just know I'm stuck on an ISP that isn't working while others have no problem...

The new MTN network uses IP range of 105.xxx and this isn't recognized by Microsoft to be South-African so it gives an error

"Sorry, Windows 8 could not be downloaded in your country!"

Dear Axxess Client,

Good Day

I apologise for any inconvenience caused. Looks like the IP address range is not being read by Microsoft as South African.
Unfortunately, I do not think the error lays on our side but I have however logged a query with MTN business to have a look at anyway.

Doing a whois lookup for your last IP address on your uncapped account, it definitely shows it's registered to MTN and South African. I've attached a screenshot to show the IP lookup.

As soon as we get any feedback from MTN, I'll let you know.

:(

The 105 IP range was bought from IANA by AfriNIC in 2010,so at that point It's reserved for Africa

MTN bought the IP block from IANA,ip block is assigned to Afrihost,it's listed on the IANA and AfriNIC lists

So I should think if you run a Geo-IP list you'd be scraping details from IANA or the different area registrars like AfriNIC,if not you're a dumbass from a technical side :P,so blame lies squarely with AfriNIC or the Geo-IP providers

*edit - saw similar issues when Vodacom started allocating 10x.* addresses in their 3g space

Well I got it to work! But a bit scared to go ahead, I used http://www.justfreevpn.com/ and setup the US one to work, My IP changed from the 105.xxx to 65.111.xxx so then it gave me a price in Dollars! I know the UK one should work better but I dont want to pay in POUNDS! And I put a fake zip code and it asked for my credit card details..

Think I should go ahead??

LOL, I don't dispute I am a 'dumb-ass from a technical side'.

Most of what you replied with goes over my head, but I understand the fundementals. Thanks for the explanation :-)

Afrihost have also now written back to say that they are dealing with MTN to resolve the issue and will come back to me as soon as they have more information.

I'll pop their reply on here if there is anything useful for others struggling with the same 'online purchase not available in country' issue.

If you purchase a upgrade version and install it, what happens if I want to reinstall windows due to a format or new motherboard? Will I still be able to reinstall windows 8 somehow without purchasing a new licence?

Yes, it will download a ISO file which you can then keep for later but I think you will need your windows 7 KEY for that, not sure..

Are you able to install over Windows 7 but during installation format the partition? I have read the problem comes when activating. Surely if MS allow this during an install from a bootable disk it should be OK? Anyone tried this?

lol anyone willing to borrow me there account which has a registered IP?? As I am on Afrihost and it doesn't work!

I am desperate here...

Cant you use your phone's internet just to complete the purchasing part of the process, and then download over ADSL?

Seriously considered buying it, but there ain't a snowball's chance in hell I'm paying for this shyte now. To the bay of the unsinkable ship we go...

WHAT A MESS!!! I bought the incredible connection version. There is no indication at all that it is only an upgrade. I really hope it is the full version, otherwise???

It is definitely the upgrade, as that is the only version sold as a boxed retail product.

Goeie genade, but you oakes can make it difficult. I just came from Makro with the box set with a serial and 2x DVDs (32 and 64 bit) and it cost me R499. Why sukkel with downloads, Dollars and Pounds. Just buy the local box set. And no, it is not a full version. It is an upgrade only.

Coz i'm a cheap skate and want it for R125! lol

Found an easy solution for Afrihost customers wanting to upgrade to Win8!

Simply just change your account back to [email protected] when running upgrade assistant. The old IS account still works (as of today at least) and the MS sees you as a SA IP and bobs your uncle :-)
