Windows 9

It's installed but I'm not very fond of it... :o

Nuhi, the dude who made nlite and vlite announced last year that he is working a new tool for Windows 8/8.1. Still no sign of it.

Yeah saw that, hopefully something materialises soon.

I'll be moving as well, since I need to keep up with the times. 8.1 Update is perfectly stable and fast and fluid, some workflows are much more efficient than how I used to do things in Windows 7.

However, they need to bring back the same search functionality in Windows 8 that they stripped out in 8.1. Search was much more powerful back then, but it just needed a better UI. Now it's a lot worse. Microsoft has a habit of delivering good ideas with fatal flaws and then fixing them by removing everything that made it attractive in the first place.

What's wrong with search in 8.1? I haven't noticed any change. I use the Start button menu and Windows Explorer to search.

Its borked pretty bad.

try searching for any item in control panel from the search charm/bar it just doesn't work. many times that I've searched for device manager only to remember that it no longer works :(

I can search for control panel items just fine. Get Start8 man. How have you used Windows 8 all this time without it?

Start8 just adds a proper start button. I also use it to boot directly to desktop so I never have to lay my eyes on that disgusting Metro crap, but I think Windows 8 now offers desktop boot anyway.

8.1 has a proper start button... just a crap UI for the menu.

if you right click on your taskbar and click on properties there's the option somewhere to boot to desktop.;)

Which is why it's not a real start button. Start8 gives you one that functions much like the Windows 7 button. And I'm aware that Windows 8 was patched to offer desktop boot - just saying I have no need to find it because I've had it since the day Windows 8 released thanks to Start8.

What did you do to your machine?
Just searched device manager under the charms bar on the right of the screen:

Nothing that i am aware of. This is the case with the last 3 installs I've done and patched up to 8.1 update 1.

I'm guessing, because I haven't taken the time to test it, that there's some differences in how search works if you have a Microsoft account or a local user account.

I know that using the "search the internet" function inside the Charms search only works through Bing and if you have a Microsoft account.

Im running one machine through a Microsoft account and the other is domain joined. Might give it a shot with a local account and see what comes up.

I jumped from XP to 7 on my desktop. I'm not interested in 8 at all. My laptop came with 7 and I intend to keep it for a while. I have a tablet that serves the same purpose anyway (and is easier to carry around). My next Windows OS will be 9. And that will be the day MS ends support for 7 :D I only upgraded my desktop from XP a year ago by the way (hides) and I absolutely LOVE S7ven!
