Windows 9: Resolution support up to 8k, better DPI scaling

Thanks to the copious amount of leaks we have seen over the past few days, we are learning all sorts of new details about the OS. And if you are willing to believe this leak, which you should, it looks like Windows 9 will support higher resolution displays better than Windows 8.

For those of you who have used high DPI devices with Windows 8, you will know that the OS struggled with supporting these devices. Windows 8.1 made it a bit better but support for high resolution display is still not all that great from developers and even in some Microsoft branded products. But, that all appears to be changing with the next installment of Windows.
According to the folks over at PCportal, who appear to have an older build of Windows 9, it looks the next major installment will support high resolution displays up to 8K.

The image above shows the new sizes for the Windows Explorer icon found in Windows 9 and the image below shows scaling for classic apps that need to make use of the higher DPI.
Microsoft knows that higher resolution devices will become the norm during the lifecycle of Windows 9 and that is why they are including this support. While 8K may seem a bit high, in a few years from now, we have no doubt that it will become a standard resolution on high end machines.

Microsoft: Windows 9 will be free for Windows 8 users

The President of Microsoft Indonesia has stated that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade to existing Windows 8 users. The Technology Preview of Windows 9 is expected to launch next week. For Windows 8 users it will easy to obtain Windows 9.

As soon as the OS is released Windows 8 users only have to update their system. Windows 9 will then automatically be installed, according to the President of Microsoft Indonesia, Andreas Diantoro, in an interview with the Indonesian site Detik.

Microsoft has planned a press event next Tuesday (30th of September) where it willlikely announce Windows 9. The president of Microsoft France hinted that Microsoft’s upcoming OS will be indeed called Windows 9, the OS was codenamed Threshold till now. From screenshots and videos we know that Windows 9 will reintroduce the start menu but with Metro Live Tiles, it will be possible to run Metro applications in a desktop window and Windows 9 will introduce a notification center. Microsoft will also add its digital assistant Cortana to the OS.

Windows Technical Preview weighs in around 4GB, here's where the download will be

Someone at Microsoft is having a rough evening after it was discovered that the staging site for the Windows technical preview was accidently made available to the public. Because of that post, we have been able to uncover a few details, such as where the download will be posted.

If you bookmark the source link below, based on the staging site, that's where the download will be posted once the page goes live. While the staging page was full of links that went to dead sites or Windows 8.1 content, the URL slug of the download link shows that Microsoft is gearing up to release the preview.

The relevant part of the slug is "evaluate-windows-technical-preview-for-enterprise". More so, if you look at the image below, you can see a small screenshot of the new OS with the virtual desktop icon and the search icon too.

The 64bit version of the OS weighs in around 4GB while the 32bit version is a little bit over the 3GB mark.

We don't have to wait too much longer to learn more about the OS as Microsoft's event takes place on Tuesday of the upcoming week. But, if that's too long to wait, we will have a preview posted up on Monday that gives a few new details about the technical preview and what you should expect. Or, you can check many of our scoops of the OS, here.

If free, they seriously need to allow the use of Windows 8 keys in fresh Windows 9 installs. Nothing more annoying than having to jump through hoops to install 8.1 when you legally own windows. If not, atleast provide a web service to upgrade the keys or something.

My Win 8 is an upgrade license and I fresh installed with it. Just make an installation DVD using the official MS utility while still using the initial installation.

What's the catch? :D Getting spammed with unblockable ads 24/7? If so, no ****ing thanks.

Yeah no.... That would be a dumb idea....

Looking forward to giving this a shot. Pitty the download servers will probably be overloaded for the first few days

+1 Prolly did it to force users to use the store more.... since upgrading from 8 to 8.1 has to be done through "that store thing that no one goes to"

Yeah, I've been using Window 8 since the developer previews and I still don't use a single metro app - hopefully window 9 somehow changes that.

oh lord. no one will buy it now with the skip one rule :erm:

My OCD is freaking out :(

This changes everything:

"I have a Windows desktop, down here I have a taskbar. When I click the Start icon I get the Start Menu."

/ends presentation.

If all we're getting is a start menu and windowed metro apps, Windows 10 better be free for Windows 8 users.
