Hi

My Windows Media Player cannot play some files I throw at it. .mp4 .mp3 .wav you name it (avi .mid .aiff and .flv work though.). It just says the following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The PLayer might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I'm running a relatively fresh install of Windows 7 and I installed the codec pack K-Lite 9.85.

I've tried changing my sound output device in WMP
I've tried reinstalling my codec pack

It can't even play the sample music that is found in the Libraries/Music folder (which comes with the OS)

Any suggestions?

You don't need a codec pack to play back avi and mp3 files.

What happens if you right-click on a mp3/avi file & choose the "Open with" dialogue and select Windows Media Player?

Can you do a system restore of your Windows 7 installation before you installed this codec pack?

And then try again to playback an avi or mp3 file?

*Did you install this codec pack as local administrator on the computer?

Check the "Options" in Media Player and check which formats it is enabled to play. Check the boxes of all the formats you want it to play and then reboot the system.

Do you have any other kinds of players for media eg. winamp, vlc player etc. You installed k-lite so you would have Media player classic. have you tried playing any media with that player??:)

I did everything suggested. It worked. Not sure which. I downloaded the WMP 12 install file. reinstalled it as admin, reinstalled k-lite as admin. then did what Ashblonde said. rebooted then worked. thanks
