... we can see that OpenOffice.org is indeed a memory and CPU hog. It is literally taking up about 10 times the processing time and memory to just load the application itself along with a blank file. It doesn't matter how fast the CPU is, 10 times is 10 times and OpenOffice is simply bloated. If that doesn't convince you, look what happens when we try to load our large 16-sheet sample.

Boss... I never liked open office in the first place... If I am not mistaken I was never able to use Right-Click on Spreadsheet, and besides... make it your default program for office and you will be sorry.... is there another version of office in Linux like Works for microsoft?... but hey... I am willing to change if I have to... just to spread the word.. and also... open office is great for first time users.

There's a huge difference between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office -- namely $$$.

OpenOffice has a slower startup and a bigger memory footprint, no arguments there, but considering it's the only price I'll pay I can live with that.

Whoever wrote that article should be shot. Do they not understand that the main reason openoffice take so much longer to open is because of workarounds put in place to work on Windows.

There is alot of malfunction code in Windows to prevent Openoffice to work without these work arounds.

Try Openoffice on linux and then on Windows, same program just without the work arounds and you will see, it performs a hell of alot faster.

I agree utter rubbish.... more of what can happen when M$ do not invite all to the party

I can live with things that take a bit longer to open - if i still have the R2000 in my account that I would save from not buying M$ Office

Cant wait until a native osx Aqua version. The latest build seems pretty decent under x11 (whatever that is :))

I think MS see the threat that Open Office poses as they seem to be implementing support for these document standards in their new version of Office.

heck... i rather spend the MS Office money into other areas for my PC... besides since i aint a regular office apps user at home, so i am VERY HAPPY with OpenOffice since i already use the first release they had 5 years ago.

The only MS app i have on my PC is Windows XP. :p

Just keep in mind Open Office includes an MS Access PLUS MS Visio equivalent. The MS Office version coming with those two costs at least R4000+ retail.

I still think OO 2 is a quite a big step forward, i was impressed with all the tools and i do feel i can actually do all my office stuff on it [minus the resource usage, but i kind of expect it from Java apps these days]. Now MS office just need to get that opendocument support going , as OO seem to work better if i work in that format :P
