I suppose technicaly speaking it's true. The name "Windows Phone" refers to versions 7 and 8 that came out years ago.

Microsoft has indeed canned Windows Phone (as per V8.1) and is now doing Windows 10 Mobile. And that is very much alive. There is no way they are killing Windows 10 Mobile. I have it on the Lumia 950 XL and the dev preview on the Lumia 1520.

And like many I'm waiting for the Surface Phone.

Why would they exit? They're most likely going to streamline. The Surface brand is hugely successful.

Doubt it'll be killed off entirely, but they won't put out the mass of (especially low range, rubbish) phones they did last year ; only a handful each year or two going forward. If they could get Google Keep (along with GMail & Calendar they already seem to have), I'd consider one.

What’s the bottom line? If you’re buying a Windows Phone, by and large expect to get the best Microsoft experience on your device. Microsoft may make the apps for other devices, but their Windows apps will forever showcase their best work. Don’t believe the naysayers and experience it for yourself.

The Universal apps in Win 10 are really good, as you get the develop the single app for your phone, Xbox and desktop. It's been embraced quite a bit recently by Netflix and other companies, but it still needs a year or so for apps to be updated to become a competitor against IOS and Android.

You may want to actually go and research a bit of the history of Nokia and what happened to the company. Its downfall was not Microsofts fault at all but their own.

In real world terms, they’ve done absolutely nothing: Microsoft has maintained complete radio silence on the rampant reliability issues that dog Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. There has been no press release. No blog post. No press event. No web video. No letter to customers. Nothing.

Most important, Microsoft, tell us that you WILL fix these problems, that they are just a perfect storm of glitches in new hardware and new software and that there is nothing there to suggest that Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 are irreparably broken. These are beautiful and expensive devices. But our faith is shaken.

You can’t just talk about trust, Microsoft. You have to establish and keep trust. And silence will not achieve that.

It is difficult because Microsoft has competitors to almost all their products. They both have music streaming, maps, email, navigation, notes, etc. At least with IOS the Apple versions are sometimes a bit gimped, and Google offers a decent alternative.

That said, I do expect Google to be more Windows friendly during the course of this year and bring their apps over.

Yes GLOBALLY WP has lost a lot of market share (and this is due to many reasons including lack of devices towards the launch of Windows 10 Mobile), but the approach Satya Nadella has taken with their mobile division has been passive at best!

You can't expect to sell more than 10.5 mill devices when:

1. You have cut down the number of mobile devices available from 30 to about 5
2. Your devices are not available on major carriers in most countries (incl. Verizon in the US), and lack of stock availability on networks that actually offer it (we have seen this in South Africa)
3. Your priority is in "selling" Microsoft products on other platforms (Android, iOS, OSX) than creating a big footprint of your own devices first.
4. A perceived confusion from consumers who do not understand which device falls into which tier range & where Surface Phone & Lumia will fit in all this.

I hated Ballmer, but Satya when it comes to Windows Mobile, is probably the worst CEO MS has ever had! His silence and passive attitude with new products, that need to go all out to play catch up, will end up wasting Microsofts progress (which wasn't much to consumers in general lately).

The guy has platforms that can tap into each others user bases, from gaming to mobile to PC, and Microsoft right now seem to be waiting for someone else to do the job for them!


Love my Lumia 950 though, even the claimed random restarts I haven't experienced!
