Hi,

I have a HP Envy dv7 which came preinstalled with Windows 8. My friends father can't stand Windows 8 so he asked me to please install Windows 7. So I format the hard drive, enable Legacy in BIOS and begin the installation of Windows 7. The installation works and right at the end I get the following error:

"Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware"

Windows Setup Error.jpg

I tried it again and even went as far as installing a different hard drive but still get the same error.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get Windows 7 installed please???

I read online about a few command prompt tricks to bypass this error and take you to the screen to finalize setup which I did but once you try install any drivers ect it tells you it can't and then you get more errors.

Is there something else I am missing maybe?

MY girlfriends laptop I bought about two years ago had Windows 8 installed and that was as easy as formatting and reinstalling Windows 7 without any errors.

Yes I tried that and it got me through. But when I tried to install my 3G Dongle to download the drivers it gave me errors about installing the USB and not being able to sign it ect. Will try again but it doesn't help if there are no way for me to install drivers. Windows 7 normally installs the basic drivers after installation but this time there was nothing.

Its a brand new laptop too which was running perfectly with Windows 8. I get the same error even after installing a new HDD.

You have made sure that the HDD is IDE/AHCI? Try swapping it if it doesnt work.

I looked in the BIOS and there is no option for me to change this anywhere.

Are you able to check how it's mounted though? Should be under "SATA information" (MSI) or something. Just looked around the house, sadly only have 1msi, 2 acer, 1 dell laptop, the rest are custom PCs, so can't advise on bios, sorry.

Checked now and cant see any of that info. The only options in BIOS are:

Main
Security
System Configuration
Exit

Went through all the menus and that doesn't show up anywhere.

Im honestly stumped!

It's under Main for the MSI, first entry. Are you running an SSD or a HDD?

Why, Oh Why, do people constantly ERASE pre-installed Windows 8 installations on a desktop / laptop, when ALL you need to do is install Start8 or Classic Shell?

Then the desktop interface looks JUST LIKE Windows 7 to 99.9% of users, WITHOUT having to jump through hoops or resort to all manner of kludges to try & get Windows 7 to work?

And the laptop is not for me. Its for a friends grandfather who is 87 years old and prefers Windows 7. I know about the shells ect but the menu and interface does still look different.

I checked under main and don't see MSI, unless I am missing something?

Have managed to download the WiFi drivers so gonna try the force command to complete it and see if I can install anything and take it from there.

So after forcing it to complete, I inserted the USB with the WiFi driver and the USb installed but when trying to run the installation I get an error saying windows requires all drives to be verified and have a certificate or something like that. HOnestly not sure what to do next. Why is it so hard to install a previous version of Windows? Even on a completely different HDD...
