Ok, does windows store automatic updates somewhere or do you have to download them again after a format? :)

i think windows might store them somewhere in the windows folder but good luck finding them... i couldnt.
next time just download the updates from windows update catalog. you can save them from there.

In your windows folder, there is a folder called... errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
it does download it... but now I can't remember..... ARG!!!!!!!!!!!

AFAIK, the downloads are placed in the "C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download/" folder for XP and Vista... all files are placed in seperate folders with really arbitary names, so you'll have to search for the ones you want...

Last time I checked you will have to re-download them. If you want to avode this problem in the future however, disable automatic updates and manually download the updates from the microsoft site.

Beanie covered this a while back from memory...
Before you format you can copy them and get them to reinstall without redownloading
Let me go see if i can find that thread for you

Its in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Burn the download folder to a disk and just copy and paste into the same directory for future reinstalls.

For any1 who is interested!

Anyone followed the above cos i just took a look at backing-up my own now and that downloads folder size is only 4.8Mb
on vista with SP1 installed

Surely thats not right to be holding all previous updates for reinstall?

Enable the "View hidden files and folders" and you might see more of it I reckon. Not sure though. Haven't used windows in a while

I'd imagine SP1 contains alot of the updates already. And as far as i know, there are a whole different folder for the Service Packs. A Service Pack is meant to be exactly that....take 6 months of update and make one package ;). Only catch is Microsoft seems to be lazy on the service packs. Usually you could easily just upgrade XP to SP2 and then a small amount of updates, now you need to get SP3...not sure where we're on that tho.
