Windows user to Mac - Tips, Suggestions & Apps

Annoyingly you can’t just copy and paste out of the screenshot tool like on iOS, but have to save and then to look for the file.

Stupid oversight in basic workflow and convenience.
There is a workaround

Command-Control-Shift-4 - screenshots to the clipboard so you just hit paste

Btw, can't believe no one has mentioned "Drafts" * - absolute best 'quick note' taking tool ever (syncs with your phone/ipad as well

* it's main party trick is to always open a blank page with the cursor active (and on ios, the keyboard up) when you click on the icon - insanely useful for when you need to jot down a quick note

Definitely a cool looking app, but it looks a bit too much like Evernote for my liking. Hence why I like Focused for just quickly juggling a bit of text. Evernote also has a quick notes feature accessible from the menu bar, but I turn all that off because it chows memory.

If you hold control when your taking the screenshot it goes to your clipboard rather than saving it as a file.

Evernote is a bloated mess in comparison to Drafts

I'll check Focused out as well (although I'm very happy with Drafts)

Drafts doesn't look like the same sort of notes app that Evernote is. And yes, since the huge update last year to Evernote, the platform has gone right down the toilet. Their forums exploded so badly they've been apologising and providing info about forthcoming updates nonstop, with a ton of people abandoning them for Nimbus Notes (which was on AppSumo not long ago, I also got the LTD just in case).

Bear looks like the nicest Mac alternative to Evernote I've yet seen. But it's Apple only, and I'm an Android user.

Hmm copy/paste from SS tool seems to work fine for me?

How? I’m referring to when you make edits to it with the interface and then want to copy the change out.

Not the direct to clipboard capture of screenshots.

See above.

I mean specifically when you’ve wanted to make an edit to a screenshot and then send it on.

Not the same thing.

I mean when you take a screenshot and your want to draw an arrow on it or add text or do whatever there is no way to simply copy and paste that out again and have the screenshot disappear.

iOS you take a screenshot edit it and then auto delete it once done and it’s one great workflow.

I still don't understand to be honest. Do you just want the SS tool to auto disappear when you hit copy?

Thanks for the replies guys. I feel much better about this now. Been feeling like maybe I should have just bought the Mac Mini if I'm going to be a desktop user nearly all the time. Glad to know it doesn't much matter.
no, you should have bought the mini rather. It’s a beast of a machine, dead quiet, and super portable. I even travel with a mini and have a zen screen for it. One issue all MacBooks have is thermals. Do anything remotely intense and it becomes a jet engine in front of you.

Maybe older MacBooks? MBA M1 doesn't even have a fan and afaik the MB Pro M1 has a fan but it rarely spins up to an audible level

Do you guys rock them naked or have some sort of protection on it?

I'm quite paranoid of it getting dings and dents as I've seen many in the wild with these battle scars

Just ordered this - Amazon link. Which I think is very cheap for what you get

Really only got it for the hardshell case and sleeve - won't be using the rest

Edit: Also ordered a new type c cable as well - Link

I run naked, but might get a hardshell case at some point.

Speaking of Amazon, got this for carrying around: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N590YOT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Can fit the charger in the front pocket with some other accessories. Having my entire 'workstation' in such a small form factor is really awesome

You can’t hit copy at all.

That’s my problem.

Take a screenshot with Command + Shift + 4 and now go draw a circle or something on it.

Because it’s not an actual app that opens you can’t just hit copy all you have is the Share function which lacks Copy and has a load of useless apps instead.

Capturing straight to clipboard with Ctrl + Command + Shift + 4 does the job for direct capture but then you can’t edit.

It’s just a silly unnecessary step.

Now you need to save it and then go find it in Finder and then either attach it or open it and then copy it. Then it leaves it on the desktop so you have clutter to clean up.

In contrast the entire screenshot process on iOS is done in a temporary state that is then asks you to save or delete in the workflow and it's just so much more useful.

Not the M1.

In the past yes.

Company policy for us now is to issue a cover to protect it just a little but also stopping idiots from putting stickers on it that don’t come off.

Personally I never rocked them with covers and never had issues until my newest one I dropped off the kitchen counter when it hooked on my bag.

Now I’m rather safe than sorry.

That being said it has a minor scrape and bulletproof without any harm done still.

I couldn't find anything less than R800 for a hardshell case (2020 M1) on Takealot so went the Amazon route and it was much cheaper

Thats easy enough to automate with Automator.

Yeah for sure but the point is still that it's a silly oversight for a built-in app not to have the simple option to either share to clipboard or simply press Command + C and be on your way.

Also not sure you can actually use Automator either since no app is actually opened, it's all inside the preview context.

And then even more so it makes more sense to then just install something third party to solve the problem than make a whole automator.
