WindowXP activation question

Hi

Quick question to all the ms hip people. I currently run winxp on a partition on my pc, and also inside a vm in linux.

It activated fine (yes it is a legal copy, that is what is #$%^^# off so much) on the win partition, but now that I am trying to activate it in the vm (on the same machine), I get an error, that I used up all my activation whatche magizits. Surely, I can install my copy of windows as many times as I want (on the same machine)?

So what to do now? Do I need to buy a new license? OR can they reset the count?

Use the phone call option, is all. You only get a certain number of internet activations.

I think you're gonna have to give them a call and ask. Yet another example of Microsoft's money-grubbing; giving you a limit to how many times you can activate a piece of software YOU PAID FOR. And then they wonder why there is so much piracy...

Restricted number of internet activations? Maybe within a certain period of time but when I still used Windows I activated my copy more often than I brush my teeth and never have I had a problem. This is now using both phone and itnernet activation.

Better get to a dentist, only having brushed your teeth 4 times is a problem :D

Um, actually, I have activated it somewhere above 100 times since I got it some years back. Even activated it in vm format on my laptop about 6 times in less than a week (trying out several vm options, etc)

Use the 086/0800(cant remember) number in the phone option, it's an automated voice system so you don' actually speak to anyone. You enter your code, then they give you thier code:). Very easy.

Bear in mind that a VM appears as different hardware, and as I understand it, you need a license for each VM.
I stand to be corrected though.

Yeah obviously, but I only had one running at a time. I might not be a fan of M$, but I still do not run more than one copy at any time.... <which is why I moved to Linux>

As has been said before: You'll probably have to phone Microsoft for the activation. But as far as I'm aware you are not allowed to install that copy of Windows XP on the Virtual Machine, you need a license for every Virtual Machine.

Yup, they've sped it up over the years, used to be quite a long call. Its quite a bit more intuitive these days. After a good few phone calls they also start putting you through to a consultant, that asks why you are activating. A simple truthfull, I'm "re-installing" is good.

i would not use reinstalling as microsoft stores your system setup and will validate after your install

best is the saying your pc was hit by lightning and you need to replace the mobo

upgrading is another good one

your mobo just died and you have to replace it

And as said before, I only have one.... which is also the only place my copy is running.

I was not referring to you, otherwise I would've quoted your post ;)

What I meant was that (as far as I'm aware) you may not install it on a partition and on a Virtual Machine with the same license.
