So as we've all started feeling, it's getting a bit chilly these days and in no time winter will be here.

Our bedding at the moment isn't quite winter proof. We have a simple microfibre duvet which is perfect for summer but way too thin for winter. I would like to know what you guys do in winter to keep warm? Any suggestions as to what duvet i should buy or should i just opt for fleece blankets? I've seen a number of these blankets at woolies and @home.

Any of you still use electric blankets? How safe are they these days?

I can only exchange body heat every second weekend when I'm at home, so my solution:

Use a decent mattress protector/underblanket, thick winter sheets and a decent duvet then go commando!! More is not always better...

Thanks for the ideas! I might try that. Not the commando thing though :D

I have a big hot water bottle... its a 40kg black labrador that sleeps on the end of my bed..... much more effective

Goose down duvet. Bought one last year; didn't even need any blankets. And I get cold easily, so that's something.
AFAIK, @home have them on sale at the moment too.

I spent some very cold nights in Scotland, best thing is a water bottle by your feet like was said, works well :)

How is a good down duvet long term? Does it go lumpy?

This. Make sure the duvet has compartments so the down stays evenly distributed.

Had it for a year now, still perfect. Make sure it's boxed or box stitched (whatever the terminology - where it's stitched so that the little boxes of feathers don't move anywhere else). Shake it out a little every day when making the bed too. Still as fluffy as the day I bought it.

We have a year-old down duvet which also works fine. If those are too pricey, then I recommend putting winter sheets on, followed by a fleece blanket and then your duvet. Those 3 layers should trap your body heat fine.

Use a Blankie as the mattres cover. Sleep on top of it not under, use a duck down duvet.
