Scenario: I got a network setup at home and working perfectly, but now what I want to do is extend a wireless signal about 150 - 200m away. Its a friends place that is down the road. His has a flat above a garage, so the atenna will be in line of sight and the attena will be place on my garage.

Question: Can someone please advise me on which antenna to go for, I would like a stable and reliabe, but reasonable priced attena that can do the job above. Don't want to have issues when it rains or wind starts blowing. I have no idea what I am looking when they 5ghz or 2.4ghz and the dbi. I can make some conclusions, but my conclusions usually far fetched.

I am posting this in here as I think the guys that post in this forum are more clued up.

Thanx

Hi

Wireless is not an easy always work first time tek. you will need to create some kind of bridge setup between you and your friend.

What is your budget on this?

Don't actually have a budget, just checking around for prices and then will calculate if its worth it or not.

And here I thought it would be easy, just plug and connect. But guess nothing in life is easy

OK, do you also want to connect via the wireless, or is that just to beam to your friend?

If so I would sugest, an outside 2.4GHz 14dBi Panel Antenna connected to your switch, and maybe an Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco M2 on his side.

2 x ZYXEL WAP3205
2 x ZYXEL Directional Antenna

One unit set in AP mode, the other in Universal Repeater Mode (AP/CLIENT/BRIDGE) configure UM unit to access AP unit, then install in their relevant locations. Attached directional antenna and align, then you should be good to go. The WAP3205 is n/b/g rated, my setup at how gives me a theoretical 300mbs WiFi WAN. I am running 4 x WAP3205, 2 in my house, and the other 2 in remote locations that link back to my house. Rough setup as follows

ADSL router ---- WAP3205 (AP mode) ---- WAP3205 (UR mode) ----- WAP3205 (UR Mode) ---- WAP3205 (UR mode)

Simple IP setup as follows

ADSL 10.0.0.2 : 255.255.255.0
AP 10.0.0.10 : 255.255.255.0
UR1 10.0.0.11 : 255.255.255.0
UR2 10.0.0.12 : 255.255.255.0
UR3 10.0.0.13 : 255.255.255.0

AP links to ADSL via LAN
UR1 links to AP via LAN
UR2 and UR3 link to UR1 via WiFi

Rectron has the ZYXEL range in stock.

I would recomment 2 x Mikrotik SXT's and create a transparent bridge. Look at unitermdirect or scoop for the prices.

fingers crossed the wifi police dont catch you ;)
technically it's illegal to share internet via wifi beyond your property without a license, but i wouldn't worry too much. worst i guess they can do is ask you to stop. if however you're charging for it they can knock you with a heavy fine
