We have Broadband ADSL setup in Cape Town centre, but are looking if it is possible of a wireless connection from a PC in Tableview to our Cape Town setup with a wireless adaptor?

I have heard, one side, of it being possible if we had a big antenna and 10's of thousands of Rands and hence it would not be feasable , or
to connect wirelessly to an ADSL router

Please let me know best advice

I dont know if this is possible without spending huge amounts of money, you are going to need a mother of an antenae. It will pick up alot of interference aswell.

What do u want to use the net for in Tview?perhaps get dsl there, cost alot less.

We want to connect to PC`s in town for work via Skype etc. and access internet work

there are remote access programs and VPN's that are avaible and will cost alot less than a wireless set up

Can you please direct me to where I find remote access programs and VPN's that are available to look at (if it is better than going for wireless setup) ?

There is no connection in Tableview at the moment, and there is a Broadband ADSL connection in Cape Town.

We are looking at what will be the most cost effective route, to have the PC in Tableview connected to our Broadband ADSL connection in Cape Town.

I viewed the VPN`s ,but am still confused as to how it will be connected to the ADSL in town (will it be through a telephone line, wireless connection)???

Please help

A normal wireless link between 2 points will cost you about R2000 a side. This is for decent hardware that can do a couple of km with ease if you have LOS.

unlicensed public wireless connections also tend to get shut down by ICASA as well.

Well the 2.4 and 5.8 band is open for non commercial usage. I repeat non commercial.

Something to do with the army if i remember correctly

how a VPN will work is you will be able to connect to the yr Tview/town computers via the net but will appear as a network, all you need is connectivity on both sides.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the original question. He only has adsl on one side.

Yes, thats correct. We only have ADSL on the one side (Cape Town) and "nothing" on the other side (Tableview).

We are looking for the most cost effective and best way to connect to our ADSL in Cape Town from Tableview PC

You'll need to work out if you have Line Of Sight between your Cape Town building and the Table View one.

Use Google Earth to have a basic look, and get the actual distance involved. You'll be over the sea for most of the way.

Get that info and post back. It may just be way easier and less stressfull to get ADSL on the Table View side too!

The distance (Line Of Sight) between Cape Town building and Table View place (via Google Earth) says 14.2 km

Do you mean I'll definitely need ADSL in Tableview then (being 14km distance from Cape Town)?

Is that the best option in this case?

Yup, and internet connection on the Table View side, as pointed out - it doesn't HAVE to be ADSL. I'd say it's the best option though. It's only R150 a month.
