Wireless ISP’s under fire

Same old useless ICASA and the milkers. This situation will never change. Bah.

Totally insane. They should just say 2.4GHz is open free for all like it is in the EU or US. They don't have technical problems with that policy there, why should we have any problems here?

"Free for all" is a short sighted agument. Many WISPS break the law by using ampliferers and they basically saturate the wifi space with their money-grabbing attitudes. Wifi is FOR the people, NOT for buisness,

This is very sad, whats even worse is that these complaints were lodged by Iburst, who obviously want these network shut down.

This has a very similar taste to complaints lodged by Telkom in the late 90s against people who used voip (although the buzzword wasn't coined back then) to essentially bypass Telkom international tarrifs.

The distressing part is that the law provides these companies with the legal muscle to lodge these complaints. It still seems as if the act does not act (xcuse the pun) in the interest of consumers, but in favour of telcos.

I used to stay in an area (farms & smallholdings) where there was neither Iburst nor ADSL, hell it was a bonus when the telephone lines worked. We had a WISP there that serviced quite a large number of customers. It would be a shame if ICASA shut them down, and those ppl would have to revert to dialups... This would essentially cripple their technological growth.

They'll never make it free as long as there is money to be made out of "Regulating" it.

fine fine fine

but iburst should try providing a decent service themselves before bleating to the press

According to iBurst the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA ) is cracking down on those wireless ISPs who do not hold an Electronic Communications Service license and are using the public 2.4 GHz frequency band for commercial purposes.
...nonsensical statement #1 - iburst pls show us your electronic communications service licence ;)

Here we go. iBURST finally shows its true colours. Another greedy provider that wants to shut down the little freedom we have left in this country.

It's easy for ICASA to announce that one must have a license for this and a license for that, but have they actually tried applying for a license through their uninformed departments? It's a simple impossibility! They divert you from the left wing to the right wing, and at the end of it all, you are in the middle, back where you started.

With ICASA as the regulator, and Paris sleeping at its desk, this country's broadband infrastructure will never improve.

I dont see why anyone should abide to what ICASA has to say. Telkom is ignoring ADSL regs and ICASA says they're enforcing them. Why should ISPs abide to them since Telkom don't take them seriously anyways.

There's a sense of bullying going on here. The large providers are influencing ICASA to clamp down on the small ISPs. Ridiculous. Maybe someone (maybe the Scorpions) should investigate ICASA's backroom dealings with the large providers.

Oh boy....

Well, this puts a damper on my plans to gain access to the net. I have applied for a Telkom line with ADSL, but have been told, it will only be available in my area in Feb 07. The strange thing is that they (Telkom) say that there is no infrastructure in my area. I spoke to a friend of mine that works at Telkom, and he recons there are plenty of ports available. The other thing is that I have a telephone pole almost in my yard..... So arranging with a friend of mine, with ADSL approx a K away, to set up WiFi, is now in trouble because Icasa is now trying to regulate the "Public" WiFi..... What am I suppose to do now!!

So basically the only thing that ICASA ever has and probably ever will do is to stop the provisioning of cheap internet...

ICASA has issued a warning, saying that “The Authority wishes to point out that this technology [WiFi] can only be used without the required telecommunications licenses if specific conditions are adhered to, beyond which it will amount to a number of contraventions of the Telecommunications Act, some of which are criminal offences.”

ICASA further said that they are anxious to ensure that the rule of law is respected and that the rights of licensees are protected

... does not mention that this warning was issued in 2002 and that a great deal has changed since then (self-provisioning for one)...has it been part of this clamp down that ICASA has for the last year and a half been working directly with WISPs and assisting them to sort out interference and other issues?....no close downs / confiscations etc

[i am not stating categorically that all wisps are legal rather that it appears that nobody, including ICASA, has the faintest clue and they have admitted that]

iBurst spells doom and gloom, warning that “many of us may face information black-outs because some wireless Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are providing illegal Internet access to consumers”.

dramatic BS - setting themselves up as the new telkom? who is this "us" that faces information "blackouts"

without doubt the position of wisps needs to be regularised but this is nothing more than self-serving crap issued out by a competitor and it needs to be treated as such

hehe, should that not be an electronic communications network services license? since they can self provide? (nice to have had the lotto contract)

agreed - there is no space for this kind of behaviour and there is already a self-regulation initiative dealing with this

spot on

now if anyone from iburst or icasa can tell us how VANS licences are going to be converted.........service licence or service licence + network service licence?

IBURST Gobbledegook

Can the very clever technicians at IBURST please try to explain what they mean by " “many of us may face information black-outs because some wireless Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are providing illegal Internet access to consumers”.

I have never heard such illiterate gobbledegook from any respectable operator before.
