Hi Guys!

Now before I begin - I am kinda familair with wireless (but only used them about 2 years ago last) links but I need some advice.

ADSL is not currently available where I am (in the middle of nowhere by the way) - but about a 10km drive away it is available.

So I have a friend that has ADSL and is willing to share the connection (and apply for another ADSL line)...

So now - actually doing this more as an experiment and for the experience. Been doing some research and I am going to set up a Microtik box. There are a few other people in the valley I would like to share the connection with (gaming internet share files etc)

So, from the house with the ADSL (its on a high hill) we only need a 180 degree coverage - so an omni is not really nessesary.

I already have a Senao 102.11b Outdoor AP/Bridge - so will hook that up at the house with the Microtik box and AP. Now around my house there are certain buildings with clear LOS - but they're not practical. Hoping to do some tests and hoping that the signal will boost through the few tree's in front of my house blocking the clear LOS. Will only know once testing though - otherwise it will have to be the sites with clear LOS.

Thinking of getting the SL2511CD+ SENAO High Power 11Mbps Wireless PCMCIA Card (100 mW) for my side - but not sure on the Antenna's - any suggestions as to which will be best? And am I taking the correct approach here? How difficult is a 10km link - prolly only about 8km as the crow flies, maybe less?

What area are you in? This kind of experimenting and experiencial playing ;) is exactly what the WUG's are about... and if you get involved with them then we would be more than happy to give you a helping hand. You may even find some teenage-mutant-wifi-ninja's hopping arround on your roof :D

Yeah, getting my stuff from Miro - will look into that card!

Na been looking around on WUG - unfortunately about 3 hours away from Durbs, in the Drakensberg. But when i move to Durban (soon) will definately join up with them!

Main problem at hand through is choosing the right antenna! Hmmmm...suggestions?

look us up when you move to durban

if you going to use a RouterBoard you may want to put in two radios as it is cheap once you have the Router Board.
You can then have 2 X sectorals, 90 - 120 degree

maybe an 8db patch for your PCMCIA card to keep it neat and if it is close
or a 12 db patch or yagi.
