Hey,

A guy at my office started raving about The Wireless Guys - does anybody know them? He says their speeds are really great and pricing is ok.

Website: www.wirelessguys.co.za

They're in Garsfontein (I think I've seen their advertising at the back of a wall driving in Atterbury).

I dunno, but I stuggle to take a company with a WIX site seriously... they're a specialist ISP who cant be bothered to have a proper site?

Agreed, and if you DO go that route then at least take off the WIX Facebook / Twitter links.

Lol, absolutely... "This site was created with..." "No!"

Ok so the guys gave me a call today - coming to do a site survey tomorrow. Apparently their actual site is www.thewirelessguys.co.za - little bit better.

The guy knows my neighborhood quite well so we'll see...will get pricing etc then.

Right, so the guy was there. I have LOS to three of their towers (Moralettapark, Garsfontein and Olympus) so I can get the service.

They offer up to 4 Mbps uncapped with a static IP symmetrical. Contention ratio on international traffic is 4:1. Capped services are 4 - 5 Mbps symmetrical with a 10 GB cap (yuk) costing around R600 if I remember correctly.

Apparently they do lots of work for Bankserv SA - the guy claims they have the most sophisticated network management equipment in the market of all WISPs (shame they can't say the same about their website).

The 1 Mbps uncapped connection is R560 or so a month - which isn't bad for a symmetrical connection with a static public IP. Most ports are closed by default but you can e-mail them and have them open it for you, which is cool.

Only thing - they shape gaming (which I don't mind) and torrents / P2P traffic (sucks) heavily. The guy outright said don't use them if I was planning on gaming on my PC (apparently XBox Live and PS network are fine).

They use Ubiquity 5Ghz Wifi links. The CPE costs between R5k and R6k - which is heavily expensive - but you can work out a payment plan for it. You get to keep the CPE stuff in the end.

Still waiting for an official quote - then we'll see!

OK so they're charging me R3,300 for the installation costs - which I must say is quite hectic. I can work out a payment agreement with them, but still.

Costs:

1Mb Uncapped Internet R 699.00
2Mb Uncapped Internet R 899.00
3Mb Uncapped Internet R 1 199.00
4Mb Uncapped Internet R 1 399.00

Anybody think this is a good deal? Amobia has no coverage at my place.

Sucks that Amobia doesnt cover you as their 2mb line is R499 (new price) and install is only R999

thread resurrect

"No infrastructure"

Been the same way for the last 3 years.

Believe me if I could ADSL I would have done so ages ago. I hate wireless internet services!
So what did you end up getting?
