Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

It was in the news that students are marching to the education department demanding free education. South Africa is bigger than the small enclosed world you live in.

Nope, it was initially 0% increase, it has now morphed from some segments to free education.

And yes, your parents pay for your education not you, that is free loading. I financed my entire varsity career myself thank you very much. I worked and studied.

I said protests were peaceful right up until that point. The door to Central Block/Senate house was broken the day of the bakkie incident. When that happened I came back here and condemned it. Violence begets violence. The guy tried to run them over. Sitting on a road however doesn't seem violent to me (which was what the students were doing).
 
Wits VC explains 6% fee hike

Vice-Chancellor at Wits, Adam Habib has spelt out how the proposed 6% fee increase cap that was announced yesterday will come into effect.


Speaking to the media in Cape Town, Habib denied that the deal was a raw as asked by one of the journalists.


Instead he says the commitment further encourages discussion on the issue as opposed to having a setting figure of fee hikes.


Habib says it is not given that every institution will set their fee increase at 6% but it could be less depending on each university.


He has emphasized that the 6% cap is only for 2016.


''This should be enough to prompt negotiations to happen. We know where our goal is for our fee increase and there might be other things like the registration fee that will be tackled at an institutional level.

No, even after that point you tried to claim they were peaceful.. and as of yet there is still NO evidence other than your claims that the guy in the bakkie tried to run them over. As for sitting in the road, its illegal and infringes on the publics right to freedom of movement and thus instantly makes the protest no longer peaceful.

Sitting in the road is illegal, dangerous and a violation of the bill of rights. No sympathy.

Why should teachers get salary increases?
Why should infrastructure be upgraded?
Why should students be given better lab equipment?

If you don't see a good enough reason for any of these questions, then I guess you also don't see the value of increasing the tuition fees! Who would then care what you studied, and where??

Someone has a video. Still trying to get it. I said the students were peaceful up until the car incident. And as much as I didn't agree with the way that was handled, I defended the students because the guy was also in the wrong. And they've been peaceful ever since.

Well they won't get it...

If anything, I'm horribly disappointed in the cops for not arresting the lot of the degenerates and making them spend a night in jail. The varsity should also institute disciplinary hearings against all students who have broken the code of conduct during the protests that they agreed to and exclude them.

Let these modern day strugglers experience what their heroes experienced. Then they may have some legitimate claim to being oppressed.
 
We can all agree to disagree as to whether sitting on a road is peaceful our not
