Wits students protest over tuition fee increase

I have just watched a protester being interviewed on eNCA, and he is DEMANDING that Habib leaves, because he's a racist !

That's the problem with these ****ers is that they have no idea what they're talking about. Habib must be the best thing that's happened to Wits in the past 20 years, but because he's not black as the Ace of Spades, he's a useless racist!

Makes me sick!

Its always funny, they will strike today about the increase of fees (not to mention that the lecturers needs an increase also on their salary) and the next year they will strike because they dont get a 12% increase on their salaries?

And the very popular rhetoric at UCT now is to call for the end of outsourcing, but of course now with this whole Wits issue things have taken a different tune. Some people don't seem to understand that less fees but more expenses don't go together.

No non payment of fees is driving up the costs.
The increase of freeloaders forces paying students to pay for the deficit.
Get rid of the freeloaders and the problem with resolve itself.

There are many people willing to pay and be educated who are losing opportunities to learn and become productive, employing and tax-paying citizens.

Expel the lot of them - if you can't protest peacefully then go somewhere else.

Voetsek! - Wits students tell Adam Habib

Jeanette Chabalala and Ahmed Areff, News24

Johannesburg - A group of students protesting at the University of the Witwatersrand swore at vice chancellor Adam Habib while others threatened to beat him up before he addressed them on Friday morning.

A group cried: "Voetsek, we don't want you here", as the protesters gathered around Habib. Several security guards close to him were keeping a watchful eye over the crowd.

Habib was expected to address the students after protests led to the suspension of lectures and academic activities.

Habib was later seen chasing members of the media out. He took a photographer’s camera and left it outside the campus gate, saying all media must go.

"Why is there private security while we have campus security, who is paying for them, they are not going to protect you," protesting students said.

Students were heard saying that by chasing media out, Habib “wants to lie to us, we are not animals”.

On Wednesday, students began blocking access to the university’s entrances, in protest against a fee increase of 10.6% due to come into effect next year. Lectures were suspended.

The protest continued on Thursday and on Friday morning, while lectures were still suspended.

Students said on Friday that they were keeping Habib waiting outside in the sun for more students, because he allegedly said there were only 200 protesters.

Others said they were the ones who were going to talk to the vice chancellor, while he had to listen.

The university said earlier: "Wits University is doing all it can to diffuse the current situation on campus and are making another attempt to engage with the students at the main gates on the Braamfontein campuses now. We are confident that the students will stand down from the main gates shortly."

Agree ,from that vid I cannot see what police did wrong, people blocked entrances so police pulled them away, perhaps if police used rubber bullets,it would be "excessive" but this was just physically removing them

Yeah - no excessive force in that video.

Although I reckon the cops should break out the riot gear, tear gas and rubber bullets soon.

It's getting silly now (I'm looking at the Twitter feed of City Press journalist S'thembile Cele: https://twitter.com/SthembileCel).

They're speaking of occupying buildings, rendering the university ungovernable, shutting Wits down, etc.

SRC pres: we want freed education in our lifetime. If you do not take away this increase. We will not stop. We will shut Wits down

I'd love to see a break down of the protesters into type of 'degree', how many years into it, and how many are there on bursaries. When the whole Rhodes must Fall rubbish was going, I remember an engineering student saying he had no idea how the protesting students had so much time to waste because he was studying so hard he barely had time to sleep.

Engineering and Medical students galore. Who do you think pays the highest fees?

I can imagine it being authentic, since some of the claims are just too retarded to be made up.

Hahahaha, thanks for the friday comedy.

Seriously, it is because alot of these students go to university knowing that they won't be able to afford full tuition.

Since ShaunSA insists. So today I decided to actually JOIN the protest instead of watching from the sidelines (mostly because Adam Habib said he was gonna say hid piece). Define "animal" guys. First of all, the red shirts and hoodies people are seeing and are assuming is the EFF is actually the attention seeking Men's Res Raiders. So there was singing and singing and singing and more singing. Nobody was hurt. No property was destroyed. Prof Habib said he'd be here at 9, he goy here at 11. So the students were like, "We waited for him for 2 days. When he decides to come, he comes two hours late. Don't give him your attention"
The occupying buildings thing. "buildings", building: The Senate House. Which is where you go anyway when you have grievances. That's where everybody is now. Sitting and singing. Occasionally standing and singing to stretch the legs. It seems the idea is to end the protest today with a decision from the council on the matter. As we speak everyone is waiting for the chairperson of the council to fly from Durban. I love how you guys speak about burning, destruction as if there's been such.

Aren't they saying it could happen here, considering it did happen at UKZN not that long ago?

And it's quite rich being d1cks to Habib who is actually someone with integrity that actually cares about students.

Oh, and infringing on everyone not involved in the protests' rights is ridiculous.
