So seeing as I'm a bachelor, I've been thinking of switch all my meals to prepared meals. The reason is cooking is such a mission for one and most of the time I end up having no dinner at all. The food I buy monthly tends to go bad.

Will it be healthy if I do this and have anyone else done this?

I personally find their ready made food to be overpriced and tasteless.
They claim it is healthy though - and probably better than NOT eating or eating MacDs.

Buy food weekly, or every 3 days. That's what I do. Woollies ready-made food are ridiculously expensive for what little you get.

Good idea, nothing worse than cooking for one. Their ready made food is not bad. Got some really good things but the price is a bit steep. Will be far better than take out or eating poorly.

I live on the Woolies premade stuff.

As for the price, yes it is expensive "on the surface" [i.e. R30 for a little Bobotie and Rice thingy...but it's very tasty!] , but if you go and buy groceries for 1 person, you'll be surprised that it is even MORE expensive and wasteful. For a family of 2-3+ groceries and making food works out cheaper, but for 1 person my PnP bill was much higher for 2 weeks of food than the equivalent Woolies 2 weeks of "pre-made" food. And even then i did not feel like i ate all that well [i.e. making pizzas or steaks without any vegetables because it's just a hassle to make veggies].

I usually chuck a bunch into the freezer. I hate buying groceries every 2 days.

As for the "health" part, i can't comment, but one thing that makes a diff is the "portion size" . Since it comes in a specific portion size, you generally restrict yourself to that portion. Whereby if i had to make Macroni and Cheese "from scratch" i WILL make more and WILL eat more.

It is certainly very convenient.

That said, i can't eat 3 meals a day of JUST that. You'll get totally tired of it. It's nice for say supper [evenings] or certain lunches . Breakfast i'd stick with the usual stuff.

I buy their ribeye steak (which I grill in a pan) and some veg (spinach and butternut usually) once a week.

Get hold of Gordon Ramsay's Fast Food, or Jamie Oliver's Ministry of food if you want to learn a few recipes.
Or search for them on youtube, plenty of cooking vids on there/

The problem is most nights I'm out doing something or working late, so coming home at 9 there's no way I'm cooking so I end up drinking a beer and eating a bag of chips. So I'm trying to get away from that lifestyle.

Making the steaks takes about 20 min.
You can also make a pot of bolognaise mince in 30 min.
Then freeze it in portions, you can eat that with rice, roti, pasta, tortilla etc...

Have a look on youtube and find 10 stuff you like, then just make those all the time.

I always cook just for me and my food is still less expensive per month than any Woolworths food. About R100 for 16 pork chops from my local butchery, R100 for 5KG chicken and then I buy about 6 packs of Mccain mixed veggies, some tomatoes, fish, onions which lasts a while. I mostly buy groceries once a month and then freeze almost everything.

Some nights I will make myself a nice salad for dinner as well, and its R3 for English cucumber, R6 pack of tomatoes, R5 for lettuce and +-R20 for a bag of onions and you only buy onions about once a month. I am amble to make salad for about 3 nights with the above.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess the best is then to start cooking food and freezing it. Maybe I should just get married then the problem will be solved.

I'm currently ordering food from chef direct. I order my food a week in advance. The food tastes great and it is a good portion.

Unless you're like me and you end up cooking for two. :o
