WootBook Metal ll

So I am in the market for a new laptop - will be used for basic to medium tasks ranging from coding, light photo editing and alot of browsers (Google Apps for business etc).

Was looking around and this seems a real good price for what you get. I know you have to add SSD and Ram but I already have a Samsung nvme drive I can install so will just need to add some ram.

Is there anything better out there for the price? I am looking for something somewhat powerful but still slim and light and good build quality.

Will upgrade warranty to 3 years so total will be R12700.

What you guys think? Or is there something better I should consider?

I think it's pretty good for the price. My only gripes is that some sites have mentioned the QC is not the best and the battery is also rather small, so don't expect a full day running on battery power alone.

It's sold as a Schenker/Tongfang/Mechrevo Code 01 elsewhere in the world

The battery honestly is not a big deal as will live most its life connected to external monitor etc. Only needed for when I have to go out for work and then will have place to plug it in to charge.

Main thing I am looking for is a portable yet "powerful" laptop with good screen etc.

I don't think you'll get something with that sort of performance for the money. Something I would ask them about is if they could pair up 3200MHz RAM with that, it looks like the available RAM options are 2400MHz and 2666MHz, which is really odd. Those APU's shine with fast RAM speeds. If I were in the market for that sort of laptop, I'd go for it. It's a real banger.

I will get ram separately and look for 3200MHz ram and see what the pricing is like.

I found someone selling a second hand WootBook i7-8750H - it is alot older but comes with 1050ti GPU. Not that I need it but suppose it nice to have :)

Still leaning towards to the Wootbook metal tho as it is newer or does it make more sense to go with older CPU and dedicated GPU?

WootBook Metal comes with AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 Graphics - but doubt it any good?

Mine is the i7-9750H, 16gb Ram, 1tb NVME and the GTX 1660ti. I can even play COD WZ at about 100fps 1080p.

Is it the same as this one (just with better specs):

Ahhh I see.

So in your honest opinion which should I go for as they both cost roughly the same. The newer wootbook metal or the older one I linked to?

Honestly undecided.

There's no stock of my particular one by the looks of it. The one you looking at looks great for the price, I have no Idea how well the vega7 integrated GPU performs though. But there is a huge price difference, mine with the 1tb nvme and 16gb ram came in at about R20K.

Get the AMD if you care for multithreaded tasks

Get the Intel if you need good single thread performance and a discrete GPU for gaming.

The Vega 7 of the AMD model isn't bad, but the 1660Ti is miles ahead.

For your use I would go for the AMD, it is a bit cheaper and you probably won't use the dGPU anyway, so the Vega 7 should be sufficient for your use case

Just check your price it excludes storage, ram and an os...

I have heard good things about these notebooks you can also check out this one which is also a good deal.

Yeah the AMD one is the one I am leaning towards to be fair. I have a gaming PC that I haven't used (for gaming) in ages so gaming isn't a high priority for me.

Would the AMD one be able to run my 34" Ultrawide 3440x1440?

I will just need to add Ram to AMD version so price will most likely come to R13k"ish (depending on the ram).

If I go for the older Intel it comes with ram and ssd already for about the same price (as AMD) with the 1050ti but then with older hardware - that is my predicament.

Yeah I already have 512gb Samsung nvme so will just need to add ram for now.

I saw the one from incredible but isn't that an old outdated CPU compared to the WootBook metal ll?

I can't see why not. I think that model supports HDMI 2.0 so you should be good to go with an ultrawide of any resolution.

Other sites say you can use 3200MHz RAM which will greatly benefit the AMD architecture, so if it was my money being spent I would not add RAM through the Wootware config builder but just order yourself some 3200MHz kits separately.

If you will find yourself using the 1050ti then go for the Intel, if not then I would go for the AMD as it's a newer model

Yeah that is my thoughts too it being newer model etc.

Honestly I haven't used my gaming PC in a while as I am only playing sports games now on XBOX so might just go with AMD version and use XBOX then for gaming for time being.

If down the line, would the AMD laptop be able to connect (via USB-C or something) to external GPU and then be used for gaming as that could be best of both worlds (when eGPU cases come down in price) - thin lightweight for when I need to travel and then dock to external GPU for gaming.

Yip the CPU in the ASUS is a lot slower.

If you already have storage and can pick up an OS from Carbonite for R 100 bucks the wootbook seems like a good deal. I would just wait for Black Friday maybe this guy drops by another R 500 - R 1000

Yeah OS I can get from carb no issue there (might even have some unused keys still).

Storage is sorted, will just be Ram I need to get.

The WootBook ll is already marked down from R14,399 to R11,499 so not sure it will go down more. Wonder if I message them and ask if it will go down more. Don’t want to wait and then goes back to normal price either.

I'd bite the bullet and get it. It's a damn good deal, especially considering you will easily pay R4k more for the same performance elsewhere.

Before lockdown happened I was looking at importing one, and with customs and everything worked out I could not get the price lower than about R15'000, and that was the best possible scenario.

This is a steal IMHO, and if I didn't find a Ryzen laptop a few months ago I would have bought one of these.
