That is the general consensus. I have essential service status for my business and I will only service customers with essential service status as Annexure B is quite defined in terms of what goods can be sold in the first place but certainly a CPU cooler or keyboard would be outside of that to the general public.
 
Drat, thought I could get a 50m network cable from them but they only go up to 20m and its out of stock

Actually no, that's not how you would go about it. If you buy a product in dollars you should take into account the replacement value of said item. So on low margin items (like PC hardware) the whole supply chain adjusts their pricing based on the exchange rate. Business do this at set intervals, for instance IT distributors do ot on a weekly basis. But the Rand became so unpredictable last week that all my quotes from suppliers were only valid for that day.

If there is compliance for checking whether every order made is essential they would have been drenched in the administration thereof. I am sure they are continually engaged in legal guidance for enabling them in the lockdown, therefore it is best to only sell what is clearly stated within the regulation and directions until further clarity may be provided. We are in a grey area. The courts are going to be busy for a long time and I am sure that the powers of the Disaster Management Act are going to come under scrutiny for refinement.
 
It makes sense for Wootware to be able to stay open, but obviously their competitors should be afforded the same luxury.

Ordering hardware to enable working from home, allowing companies to order hardware that could be critical to their operations and staff etc. seems pretty essential to me in terms of allowing the economy to continue operating as well as possible during a lockdown.

I think the confusion is what is essential. The economy and business is shut down by presidential order. Those who are supposed to operate are those which are providing essential services in order for the government to do its work and the people to be able to survive, hence essential services. Now gaming the system to allow for members of the public to order a gaming headset and processors I'm sure is not the intent.

If the gaming headset was ordered because it was the best quality headset of any description in stock and the owner just wants to be able to use VoIP with clients, sure why not.

It is a bit unfair to say that any business activity that can continue with a lockdown in place is essential (for the broader economy), when so many businesses can't function in such a way, but imo it should be that way (at least when determining which businesses can ship products).

Agree to disagree mostly because you can argue essential with any goods or services that way.

Not really. If the gov added a section for businesses that enable remote working, would that not safely encompass the fringe cases being discussed here?

Surely trying to keep the economy as alive as possible is essential to SA?
