I thought the fastest Microprocessor belongs to nVidia or Ati?

*Oh, link is still down.

IBM announced details of the world's fastest computer chip. The z196 processor will be used in the new IBM zEnterprise 196 mainframe system that will begin shiping to customers September 10.

The chip, which has a world record-breaking clock speed of 5.2GHz, packs 1.4 billion transistors on a 512-square millimeter surface and combines dense caches of embedded DRAM with high-speed microprocessors, reports GigaOM. The mainframe system the z196 processor will be utilized in is the result of $1.4 billion in R&D and three years of collaboration with IBM's top clients, according to CNET.

Its a bit misleading calling this the fastest microprocessor ever. Its certainly not the fastest vector processor, or the fastest processor in an embedded device. Looks really fast, but the headline is misleading.
