The word "average" should not be used. The average SA'n struggles to buy a half-decent TV in a lifetime. That some people in SA are spending R6000+ on a games machine with the realities we sit with doesn't go down well with me.

AS a dad, who has kids, and who may look at getting a HD rig in the new future, the PS3 does not work out for me:

If I want to watch a movie and the kids want to play on the console (or vice versa) - they can't if it's the same device / setup. I would need two separate devices (console / standalone player). If they have their own setup, they're getting the old 74cm SDTV thank you very much, so getting an HD specific PS3 is a waste.

By comparison consider the scenario I'm heading towards:
a. 360, with video marketplace and IPTV in the main lounge - HD movies on demand, no optical drive required
b. Microsoft Home server to store and distribute above mentioned Digital content
c. 360 core in the kids playroom (even 1 per kid at the price) as game stations and media extenders for home server.

We can watch/play what we want, where we want it, when we want it, on 3 devices, all for less than the cost of a single PS3.
(My maths I paid R3300 for my Pro and have the server already)

I thought that's exactly what the numbers are saying, with a lot of shops selling out?

What happened to gameplay? I know HD is a big deal, but as long as you're having fun playing games, does the graphics REALLY mean that much? And doesn't that also count for the 360 then?
 
Anyone who says graphics aren't a key factor in the gaming industry is a fool. If that was the case then why aren't we all still playing on 8-bit cartridges?

I've seen the three consoles quite often lately and I must admit now that graphics do count a lot. Using the Wii as an example: It's marketed as a fun console with a different style of game play. I initially didnt think so until I saw the Wii vs PS3 and 360. Wii is fun but there's a limited amount of fun u can have waving ur controller at the TV. A friend of mine got a Wii and he said he got bored of it within two hours. Then u turn to see a 360 or PS3 and all of a sudden, the Wii factor has lost its appeal unless u have family or friends around that are keen to play with u.

Sure, what about gameplay? The 360 has tons of great games, and most kids games are cross platform anyway. And as I said before hand, as a media extender it's more than just games. To me A handful of PS exclusives just don't weigh up in comparison.

Such is life though, if all my kids friends end up with PS3's I'd consider getting them one, but so far, that's not going to be the case, MS owes me commission . . ;)
 
Then how is playing games on a PS3 on a SDTV different from playing games on a 360 on a SDTV?
