Would be burglars / syndicate?

I seriously doubt that criminals will be that obvious, but then again better safe than sorry.

put signs around your property.........."beware snakes on property, snake breeder". that will solve your problem. :D

...Most likely they will try to break in WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME.

Why would they want to do that? I'll be resisting a burglary with no small amount of force.

Next time you or your neighbour see them - run outside with your camera and starting taking pictures of them.

Good idea. I think I'll be storming out of the house for the next week or so every time I hear a car coming.

Perhaps a sign that says "You are currently on CCTV" would be affective as well?

If they want to break in, they'd better do it when we're not home. Both me and the wife agree that we put up a fight if they try while we're there.

Growing trend unfortunately. At least in my area. I forget the correct term the cops use for this, but it could be so that they can access the valuables in the safe i.e. you have the keys.

Apparently a popular modus operadi is that they switch on the kettle as soon as they have gained entry, and use that to motivate why you should give them the money/safe keys/jewellery, whatever.

Just about the only "weapon" we have is a bottle of pepper spray. I've also bought Walkie-talkies for me and the other neighbor next to me so we can instantly call on each other should the need arise. Last night though when I told them about what happened, they didn't even know whether theirs were charged. Sigh...

I've never liked guns, but does anyone know if those hollow point pellet pistols are any good for safety?

I wouldn't know about the pellet pistol, but rule of thumb is if it doesn't take them down it may just anger them.

Just to add though, from my own personal experience, almost like a spidey sense :D often when something has gone down close to me I had a very wierd sense about me like something is wrong - like an uneasy feeling. I made the unfortunate mistake of ignoring that feeling once as I never knew the owners locked their dogs up further within the property (german shepherds) and it cost me my car sound system.

Always trust your instincts man. Obviously I can only assume it is when say you subconsciously realize there was a vague noise that was "out of turn" or suspect outside - don't ignore it even if you feel silly for being paranoid. :)

Apparently you have the right to ask for police protection if you feel you are in danger

I get up for anything I hear. Our happiness is to important to me to laze about if something is possibly going on.

I know and it crossed my mind. But what would I say to them? Some guys took photo's of my house and car and now I'm freaked out? Not much of a case. I'm just feeling unsettled.

The police know that this is a modus operandi of burglary syndicates, they'll be able to tell you if one is currently active in your area and advise you further. I'd just go speak to the guys at the station, but it depends who you speak to, the person filling out forms at the front desk might not be of much help.

Also putting up a fight, especially with your wife involved, is not a good idea once they're already inside. You should know when to give up, and it's usually very soon. Have your security provider and local police patrol van numbers on speed dial in your phones, plan who will phone who etc. it's good routine to know in any case. You can get patrol van cellphone numbers for your sector, as well as the station's number if you visit the police.

So, some idiot just tried his luck. I woke up from my dog that sleeps outside barking in a funny off-key way. Got up to check and saw that he was staring over to one side of the yard. Went to another window and lo and behold, mr burglar is standing next to my wife's car, staring wide-eyed at my dog which he obviously didn't expect to be sleeping outside. I really didn't know what to do, so I started hammering on the window. He got one hell of a fright and ran for the palisades. Unfortunately, my dog didn't deem is necessary to take a bit out of his wiry ass. We phoned the police but they took almost 40 minutes to get here. Useless. In that time we drove around the block 3 times but didn't see him. Tomorrow I'll be putting up some motion detection spotlights. I'm glad nothing bad happened, but it still feels like an invasion of our privacy. Argghhh!

Oh, I brought this up in this thread because it's possibly related.

EDIT

As a matter of interest. The dog that I was previously complaining about (the neighbor's), slept through all this. That thing only barks when it is completely unnecessary.

Glad you didn't suffer any damage.

One has to upgrade security after a incident like this. In addition to the lights, I suggest a electric fence on that palisade of yours (or maybe those razor ribbon stuff) when financially viable. These criminals can get over the palisades easily enough.

Find out if you neighbourhood has a neighbourhood watch with handheld radio's, it costs around R1000 (once off) for the radio. You can then easily get assistance from neighbours much quicker than police or armed response.

Good to hear that nobody was harmed, nothing was lost.

Whilst there is nothing funny about this topic - would like to share a humorous incident.

This guy broke into the property thru the electric gate - armed with a toolkit. He was only interested in the car, wheels, battery etc etc as he had all the tools.
Luckily we heard him and hit the panic button which notifies the security co. and also sets of the house alarm.
He got such a fright on hearing the alarm - he ran off.

Left his entire toolkit - electric drill etc etc - so we scored ..

Have been busy the whole morning installing security lights, motion detector. 150Watts, 2 of them. If I'm not allowed to shoot the idiots, I'll blind them.
