WTF is power steering fluid...and why is it empty?????

So, yesterday I was filling up with petrol and the guy asked if he can check my oil and water. I say sure. 2 Minutes later he comes back to my window with a little "doppie with a mini dip stick thingy underneath it and says my power sterring liquid is finished and klaar! WTF is that? I always thought it is little fairies and elves inside my steering coloum that helps turn so easily! :mad::p

And my car was at VW about a month ago for its service and they did not say anything. I have not noticed a reduction in my power steering either.

1. Should I take the car back to VW for them to make sure?
2. Can it cause damage to my precious little Mavis (she is old and fragile)
3. Is it expensive to get this liquid they talking about?

Whatcha guys think? I know buggerall about cars so your input would be greatly appreciated. :-)

PS: All my lesbian friends were out of reach so hence I am posting here ;):p

But in anycase. Does your steering make a noise when you turn the steering?

Ofcourse its better to keep your steering fluid topped up or you could end up damaging the power steering pump or some other expensive part.

Bahahaha posts like this is why I'm on myBB lol.

If it was at VW for a service, remember some services don't include topping up of certain (or all fluids) especially services that are part of a maintenance plan. Anything to rip you for some extra bucks man.
There komputertjie that they connect to the cars probably didn't pick up the low fluid level.

If that petrol jockey is right, then damn I'd keep using that petrol station. Thorough checks dude.
 
On the phone with VW Bruma now. Guy is pushing me in for tomorrow morning as he said they need to get the fluid in there as soon as possible. YIKES!

Nah...I think VW must rather do it. I will just end up pouring power sterring liquid into my battery fluid and then have a tantrum cause my car wont start for no apparent reason! :-)

Besides, the guy that I spoke to at VW sounded cute on the phone. Might be worth checking out. Maybe he can give me a oil change while he is at it. lol.

Seriously OC, do this:

-Cancel your appointment at VW, this guy is SERIOUSLY going to see you're a n00b, and he's
gonna make you panic with "other stuff suddenly broken because you drove with no power steering!!!!!! Oh noooo!!" and way overcharge you.

- Go to Engen/Caltex/BP, tell the guy "R100 Petrol, and fill up my Powersteering please"

Bam! easy eh?


seriously, don't take your car to VW to fill up power steering...

Only because last year my car would not start. Engine would turn once and then nothing. This happened at the petrol station also funnily enough. They gave me a running start and I headed to Hi Q or whatever its called. The guy said it must be my battery. I was standing with him and he took the little doppies of my battery and put a stick in each. It was bone dry he said. He had to replace the battery and said that there is supposed to be water in there!

That is why I know batteries works on hydro power. There must be little waterfalls in there that turns little turbines or someting. Aint it amazing!!!!!!! hehe
 
It's a conspiracy thier is no such thing as power steering fluid its just old oil they sell from oil changes they connect the power steering fluid bottle to your exhaust so ocasionally it releases some liquid and makes your car spew out smoke so you can take it in for a so called "service". When really its little fairies and elves that actually handle the power steering.
And don't even get me started on the troll,orge/brake pad cover up.

mmmm it is pretty old. And has about 190 000 on the clock. But has not given me a days problems. Love my little Playa. I am confused now....should I take it VW so they can check for leaks also or just to the garage for them to fill it?

until about a week ago i also did not know about that...

i also had my :wtf: moment. the petrol guy that helped me knew a lil more :)

you get 2 basic types one for manual & one for auto.

(look at the colour if you wish)

the stuff cost about R30 & was filled at the garage. :)

still got 1/2 the bottle left.

no need to pay a mechanic hourly fee to put it in. it goes in where the dipstick comes out. i watched the guy put it in.
 
1) fill it. (edit: ask a bp attendant to fill it)
2) wait 1 week. ask the petrol attendant to check. still ok?
3) wait another two weeks, check. still okay? then it's okay.

if at point (2) it was empty, you have a leak, only THEN take it in.



But seriously OC, trust me - nothing will happen on empty Power steering, the car will just make "wheeeuuugggrr whhheeurg" noises when you turn the steering wheel if the car is standing still.
You wouldn't want to go in to VW and tell them "Oh no, my Powersteering is empty!!!", because then you will suddenly require a Full service. they spot us car n00bs a mile away.

it would be like going to VW and asking them to fill up your windscreen wiper water.
 
You could have just gone to Midas / GoldWagen and bought the power steering fluid there for 10% of what the dealer will charge you. Open the tank, fill it up to the maximum line, close tank. Go and spend the other 90% on booze and women!

just fill it this time. If it keeps happening(check once a week) then take it for a checkup.

I was also advised to keep an eye on the bottle as it is next to the battery & sometimes battery acid gets on to it & makes the plastic brittle with time, but that i could buy the bottle & spare fluid & change it myself.

:wtf: i'm not working inna car engine!
/remembers helpful spares shop :)
/thinks i'll go there if that needs changing. :p
