WTH??? Petrol going up again!!!!!

Yeah Prius has been available for a while now but for that price is it worth it? Apparently in the states u can buy one for just over half the price so basically Toyota is shafting the SA public. Nothing new.

Should be no reason why petrol should be going up this time around. Rand had been strengthening...guess the oil price is edging higher.

Seems like the oil price is to blame again. Hooray. I'm getting so tired of the fuel price going up and up.

I agree. Us hillbillies should stop using petrol and diesel to ship food and other goods to you civilised lot by the sea.
Those trucks run in both directions. :)

Screw the cape trains.
To get to work i used have to get up at like 4:40 in the morning. Run down(15 min walk normally) to the main street(old oak) catch a taxi to the train station. Then sit in the train steaming and sniffing all the beautiful odours of everyone else steaming off teh rain :( for the next 50mins to town.
Only to get the train to stop just before the station and stand there for like 10minutes at a time.

My only alternative was to join the horde of cars going to town and pay upwards of R50 a day for parking :(

It was killing me having a 3 hour commute everyday so i splurged a bit and got myself an apartment in town. It's more expensive than the one i had previously but the good part is that it takes me max 5 mins to get to work nowadays.

Life is too short to commute 3hrs a day

If you live in Cape Town, why not take the train? I take it to work most days, and find it safe and (reasonably) reliable.
Stuffing myself into a crowded train? No thanks. Did it for a while many years ago and will never do it again. I'll consider public transport when I am guaranteed somewhere to sit during the journey and I can take my bicycle with me, so I don't have to walk when I get to the train's destination.

Let tell SASOL to go *** and create your own in depended fuel source, boi-diesel and some nuclear bombs for any klien hondtjies met groet bekke

Hey, I admit that the train has its problems, however, it is much cheaper than driving and I find it a lot less stressful than driving in peak hour traffic. Besides which, I quite enjoy the fifteen minutes walk to and from the station.

To get to work by train in the morning takes approx 50 minutes vs 20 minutes by car in zero traffic, and anywhere up to 1hr in peak traffic.

Expensewise the following applies:
Daily ticket return metro plus: R11
or
Weekly ticket return R39; R7.80 per day
or
Monthly: R129; R6.45 per day

Compared to driving:
Approx distance: 20km one way
Fuel costs: Approx 50c per km
Service costs (given that I have an old car): Approx 70c per km
Total travelling costs: R1.20 x 20km x 2 = R48
Parking: R30 per day
Total travelling costs by car: R78 per day

Admittedly some peoples' car calculations will come out a great deal cheaper, but they cannot rival the cost of the train.

You forgot to factor in the half hour extra travel time. The train always takes longer than driving for me. I'd rather spend that time working and earning money.

That's going to be a long wait. Even in 1st world countries the chances of getting a seat during rush hour on a train/subway are slim. On the Paris Metro, bikes are banned on trains during rush hour.

Since often I take a 6:15 train into work and a 7:50 train from work, there is lots of seating space and I work on the train. (mostly reading - can't work on a laptop).

Does anyone know exactly how much tax, levies and add-ons are heaped on top of the oil price. So what is the basic petrol price?

Try here. Quite interesting.

Basic fuel price 53.1% according to the chart.

Which is why I hate public transport and am not prepared to use it during rush hour. I am quite happy to make my fair contribution to pollution by sitting in my car during rush hour. One key difference with the Paris Metro, besides being able to take a bicycle if I wished, was being able to get quite close to where I was going, plus it was quick and pleasant outside rush hour. I also didn't find the bus service in France to be the execrable mess it is in South Africa. The London Underground is just an unpleasant cesspool.

I agree. Public transport was quite pleasant in Paris. IMO Israel has BRILLIANT public transport.
