Was not on the PTA wug was on the JHB one and no I didnt know that in the beginning.
As for signal test, I asked many times and no one would assist so....
But anyway just stating what happened to me personally.

JaWug does not have scanning kits like PTAwug unfortunately.

Now how to relate all these experiences to a new prospective wugger. All info I got at the time I was interested (still am) was to speak to miro et al and you do not need to spend a lot to get connected. A wiki with all possible scenarios with pro's and cons of each setup would be nice. Then one would not waste money and then find you have to Upgrade again a week later.

Carry on like what ?

You just need to realise that if you join the wug you are also responsible for the network, highsites, upgrades, finding new sites, etc.

I personally know 10 current WUG users and they all gave me the same perception of the PTA WUG and that is not good.

I would love to see a poll of the general perception of the PTA WUG good or bad because so far it is only the same users replying to this post and making smart remarks about others concerns and not really addressing the issues raised.

I am looking into joining the WUG but is very hesitant after reading all the remarks. The issue does not get resolve it is rather a mudslinging session between the GOOD and BAD.


Common guys sort out the problems and your disputes’ and work on building a bigger and better PTA WUG .

It's one guy who has his knickers in a twist, probably due to being lazy anyway! Don't condemn the entire wug just because of one incident, cut off your nose to spite your face mentality.

There you go "Lost the plot again?" I read that page many times and discussed with you and other guys on IRC. I got lots of help and info but I was referring to issues of

HS setup and requirements for "performance system"
Meshing
Capacity
Speed
Performance
Wireless N
Kit vs PC MoBo vs modem
Upgrade ability
ETC.

Its not as simple as buy a kit set it up align and everyone is happy. That I found out myself with help from you guys and doing my own research. Maybe 2010 will be my year of the wug?

Guys, this is not a service you are paying for. There were no promises or ANY guarantees made about quality of service. So why are you all so up in arms?

And just exactly how has anyone been victimised? Pray do tell!

DaVirus, what have you as 8 users on WB done to improve your situation? Instead of me asking what you have done, try this, identify another HS that WB can connect to, to improve links the wug. And then work towards that by finding more possible HS locations and making wiki pages to get the ball rolling. Many other wuggers have done this before, so it is possible.

I personally spend 2-3 hours per night helping users, working on the new IP design, identifying problems etc and generally working on improving the WUG. I'm also not the only one. Granted, we need more people doing this but it's not like nobody cares or nobody is doing anything. Please be careful with generalisations. What we are doing here is trying to communicate and sort out the dispute. Quite frankly, I might be stupid but I don't know what more we can do. So I'm stumped and will refrain from posting anymore as I don't have any more value to add.

If you have clear line of sight to a highsite, it is actually as simple as that. Just need to align properly to get optimal signal.

the thing people dont understand is that a wug is a COMMUNITY network, it belongs to everyone, THUS it is everyone's responsibility to upgrade sites, find new sites, help, etc. Sitting and complaining is not going to change anything. Physical action is what is needed, but it's so much easier just to leave that part to others.

All the blame and work can not be put on a small group of users.

What people also forget is that the network is COMPLETELY FREE.

"WE DEMAND BETTER SPEEDS" sounds like a popular young politician.

Being said.
1st, I don't want to choose sides.

2nd, stiffyxyz1 is not the koos you are referring to, stop doing so. If i have a mail addy of mandela@yahoo.com does it make me Mandela? NO, so stop ASS U MING things.

3rd, if the wug is free to everyone and everyone has a say, then why not have an open POLL or a braai with a Box where everyone drops their suggestions "Anonymously" as well as descisions that will be made like the QOS thing....

4th, The WUG is not what it used to be, for the last 2 weeks there has been a dramatic change in the speeds. I have noever complained, for the simple fact, the free network...

5th, I've had a good experience since I joince, mainly because stiffxyz1 help me setup my setup, (Brother in law). He never had a bad thing to say about the WUG. After the antenna was connected and the IP requested, I was up and running within 30 Minutes. However, 2 weeks ago, something changed. Since then, the WUG was very slow.

I personally lost 2 NIC's due to lightning, and did not require any help.

I would however appreciate if the admins can sort the slow response problems as this is the main problem according to me.

And please, stop taking all the posts privately and personally.

Work towards a solution and "Listen" when a question is asked.

What has those 10 users done to improve the network ? got new highsite locations ? physically helped to put up sites ? donated towards new sites ? became admins and helped with ip design and qos scripts ? have they taken the test kit to go and do test at new users ?

Really, its a FREE service, its a COMMUNITY network, if a person is too lazy to help and read and just want others to fix the problems, then he should not connect.

The issues are being addressed, most of the answers are on the interal wiki, users just need to learn how to read.

As said to connect is easy, if you can get connection to a HS. But then when you have to create your own HS then there are many questions to be asked.

If you connect to another HS you are basically screwed if that "owner" makes changes, remove it, does shaping, etc. That's where the OP's frustrations started in the first place.
