X box 360 or PS2

PSOne was manufactured until late 2005. Longest running console ever. Those idiots at Sony must have been losing piles of money on massive manufacturing costs and all those expensive returns. And they carried on doing this for five years after they released the PS2? Madmen.

Current PS3s that have been taken apart contain PS2 hardware.

Err yeah, performance hatch is PS3, hatch is PS2. One market, cater to those on a tight budget. There are lot of them, especially in countries like South Africa. Usually people with children, who cannot afford to buy the latest electronic gadgets and the hot new games. Same people who will buy the cheapest version of a car. Car analogy holds, thanks.

If they are smart they'll recognise there is a low end market and take it. It's a totally different market where price is everything.

I have seen a lot of XBox games around in shops that sell used games. If you have friends overseas you'll have no trouble sourcing many games. Just be sure you can get the games you want now. Also check out the Cape Ads and also the Take2 forum, among other places. You'll find people selling XBox bundles at very reasonable prices.

I reckon go ahead and get the PS2, however when you have regrets about it later on then you can't say that nobody tried to help ;) You're going to be blowing R1500+ on 6 year old technology when you could put a little more and get current technology.

If you're actually going to be buying a console from what is now the previous generation, then find out which games you're likely to enjoy and buy the console that runs them. All three, GameCube, XBox and PS2, have a fairly extensive range of games. But don't buy the console, or the games, new. It is definitely a waste of money now.

On a separate note:
Riddle me this, if the game market is a single homogenous market, then why do we have handheld game devices and consoles? And why does Nintendo still make versions of the GameBoy Advance?

I haven't read this entire thread but heres my take...buy an XBox 360 even if you're not gonna play it on an HDTV (tho you'll enjoy it more on one) and spend a bit more on the 360 games. They're way more fun and you always have XBox Live to play online. Like nth said, PS2 is now a previous gen console so don't waste your money on that.

i know they say get an X Box 360 but when I was talking to another friend of mine, I miss understood him when we were talking about what I should get. He said the Ordinary X Box as the 360 wont work. I have a really old TV. I thought he meant I should get the X Box 360 originally and the the ordinary X Box thats why I put this thread up. I also put this thread up because of my other friend

I don't understand what you said...

That's a portable device, try and keep up please...
Do you know of a portable PS2/PS3 or Xbox/Xbopx360?

Lets get on the same page here. PSOne is cheap and easy to manufacture it's a console from lat '94. PS2 EE+GS are a different story and they are far from easy to emulate using software, but hardware costs allot more money. Hence the removal of the EE+GS hardware from the later PS3s in favor of the highly optimized software emulator.

No your car analogy does not hold, because 1. Cars have different target markets and different sectors which are differentiated by more than just price. Merceds for example have A, B, C, E, M, and S class cars. Many overlapping in pricing etc... Some for performance, some for luxury, some performance luxury, some SUV performance etc... Different markets not based on price but functionality...

This is not the same with consoles. Sony hopes that if you bought a PS2, you'll buy a PS3, MS hopes if you bought the Xbox, you'll buy the Xbox360. Nothing else.

What's your budget?

There's no reason not to get a PS2 as long as it has the games you want and you don't waste money buying it at the current retail price. Sony have previously stated they intend to keep selling it for a few years - they may change their mind, but they make a healthy profit on every PS2 they sell, so they have no reason not to keep selling them until the sales dry up. There probably won't be many more games released for the PS2, but it has so many games available already that this is not really an issue. If all you were interested in was playing the latest games you would just buy the latest console.

If you have the budget find a good condition used PSTwo, i.e. slim model, and a basic recent TV (you can get fairly nice 54cm TVs at budget prices). I'd recommend going for the slim model because Sony is no longer making lasers for the older models.

I will be getting the ordinary X Box, not the X Box 360

I am a huge Xbox fan but don't waste your money on an ordinary Xbox.

There are a gazillion more games for the PS2 and you can pick up a second hand one cheap.

I still say go for the 360 and buy a new tv. Buying old gen is dumb :D

OK cool, that is actually pretty cheap, haha. Thanks. Is it worth trying Hi Fi Corp though as I have had problems with them in the past

if you getting an xbox-360 I wouldnt recommend hifi corp cause if it has a problem they are reluctant to just swap it out which is the procedure but instead they try to fix it, I would go to another store like bt games or cna etc
