Ok, get this, im looking to buy an xbox 360, but the failure rates are scaring me somewhat. Do you guys think a 3 year warranty is enough?

Lol, i cranked up my Sega Genesis the other day, guess what, 12-15 something years old, still works, now THATS my kinda console :)

should I rather just cough up, get a ps3 and get it done with?

I havent heard of any issues with the ps3...

opinions?

The new xbox consoles doesnt have the problem the first lot had. So I'd say it pretty save to go out and buy a xbox console now.

I have not had a single problem with my xbox (other that scratch disks, but nothing that good ol toothpaste cannot fix)

I think three years is long enough, I expect the next next gen of consoles to start arriving towards the end of 2010 anyway...

Also the reliability issues are better than before as well

Yea I remember when I bought mine in November last year I was seriously worried about reliability. Now 6 months down the line I've had a single lock up (on Assassins Creed, which was the game afaik).

All the guys who's have failed should tell us their age. I don't know anyone with a new version (with HDMI) that has failed or even scratched discs.

yeah my noticed my freakin R700 GTA4 has got a perfect circlular scratch on it, and the xbox is only 1 week old. Going to keep a very close eye oon it. Other than that its been an awesome yet expensive (read hdtv etc) experience.

toothpaste ?

Yip, whenever, I detect a scratch on my cds (usually when the console does not want to read it).

I apply a generous glod of toothpaste to the disk, smear it in a circular motion around the surface (with a lint free cloth of course), then I just rinse and clean the disk off (again using a lint free cloth).

Put it back in and viola!! Works like a charm

I vote Gothan DIYer of the week! Will try the toothpaste, I used brasso in the past! Just one thing, as far as I know you should clean a cd by wiping from the middle towards the edge in a straight line. The circular motion thing come from the days of vinyl..

Yeah, wouldn't worry about it now. Replaced my old Xbox with a new one (and no, it wasn't RRoD) and not a problem.

All consoles will have their failure rates, but the Xbox is pretty much comparable to the PS3 now. Don't listen to the doomsday fanbois!

FACT:
The Xbox 360 does NOT have a 3 year warranty.

You may be covered for what is known as RROD - MI Digital call it something else - but any other problem, such as the console just stopping reading disks for no special reason, you will NOT be covered.

By the way - if you do experience the so called RROD and get a new console - the new one only has a 3 month warranty and not a 1 year warranty.

The reason though to buy an Xbox - online multiplayer AKA live is damn awesome BUT if you are not an online player, then get the PS3.

Alright Mr. Smarty pants. Then how did I exchange my Xbox 360 two years after I bought it without ever having seen a RRoD?

dunno

maybe you so pretty that you dazzled the dude and he didn't notice the date on your invoice?

maybe they just assumed it was a RROD error?

maybe the xbox gods were smiling on you that day?

maybe.....

I could go on and on with maybes, boils down to the fact that you got lucky.

Nope, the error was plainly stated on the fax to MI Digital. The purchase slip accompanied the fax. It was pretty obvious the graphics card was having issues and there was no RRoD. It wasn't even an SA Xbox. Went in, gave my box to the lady and she gave me a new one and an invoice. No hassles at all.

Just one thing: make sure you keep your proof of purchase. They're very particular about that!

Dude, as I said then, you must be so pretty that you confused the lady.
By default, MI Digital have a handling fee on all imported consoles, its their standard policy.
You got lucky, but that is not the norm - most of us are just a bunch of ugly regular people, and we have to pay because these consoles only have a 1 year warranty, or 3 if it can be proved to RROD OR and A BIG OR MI DIGITAL are just trying to scam everyone out of paying R760 when it is not required.

Er... not entirely sure what that means, but I get the gist. Though I did make a personal appearance at the MID offices in Bedfordview. Always find being there in person is a lot more successful than sorting it out on the phone (sorry peeps in CT).

Well I usually follow the scratches, so if they are in a circular motion, I do the same.

But thank you thank you, I assign my DIY skills to being a cheap skate

Don't stress about it saffa, the new 360's (HDMI units) are pretty solid and seem to have all the problems worked out. Either way timgaul's right: keep your proof of purchase somewhere safe and you shouldn't have any issues. My overarching opinion? The gains far outweight the pains.

(I know, pick a corner, need more coffee...)

Don't be fooled, while not nearly as legendary as the RRoD, the PS3 is having a few issues of it's own, namely with the Blu-Ray laser failing.
